Originally a Fan, Never Going Back. Over July 4th weekend, I had a terrible experience at the Beech Tree & will not be returning… ever. The staff has never been great, but everything else has always been excellent. This time, the waitress was ruder than ever – she told us to get our beer samples ourselves, screwed up the order, waited about 15 minutes before telling me they were out of what I’d ordered for lunch, took our drinks before we were finished, barely checked on the table & then rounded our meals UP so that our check was higher than it should’ve been.

Great food, the service will make you homicidal. I’ve been a patron of the beech tree for almost a decade. It started out before the rise of the bistro boom and has always had great food. Those standards have never dropped. But the people who wait, seat, and bus tables are atrocious. Unfriendly, look at you then walk by, never refill a drink, never drop the check, seem entitled for tips without having to do anything to work for them. Yes, it is a small restaurant that obviously has not expanded to account for its recent popularity, but there is no reason to let standards drop to the level they have. I’ve never once gone there and not ordered alcohol, or shared food, which I know can be a put-off to servers. I’ve waited patiently for a table for 45 minutes, or at the door for 20 before with two or three people making eye contact yet no one asking me if I need to be seated. When my party sat ourselves, we waited for another 25 minutes for someone to even give us a menu. They just don’t care. The biggest problem is their unapologetic attitude. You can mention you’ve been waiting, or ask if your server changed, and they just look at you blankly and offer no apology or excuse. So, you can make up your own mind to go to enjoy the food…but if you hate waiting for a table, then for a drink and menu, then for someone to take your order, refill your drink, clear your plates, then maybe your check will show up a half hour later, you will forget how good your wine was or how impressive their special was that night and go home wholly unsatisfied and maybe end up stopping at mcdonalds on the drive home out of sheer desperation for a mcflurry just to cheer you up.

The fish cakes were terrific and substantial for apps. The spinach salads terrific as well and the marzipan cake heavenly. Service was slow but it’s a busy place, so keep that in mind. I’m told the bartenders know their stuff too. Be sure to check the specials ad they’re inventive and reasonably priced. I’ll be back.

Great Little Spot. I had the blue marlin dinner special and it was outstanding. If I’m ever in the Poughkeepsie area again I’ll be back.

Nice relaxed atmosphere, unpretentious but still polished. The food was yummy, some items good and others great. The great ones were broiled oysters with bechamel, and a portobello sandwich.
