It’s fair to say that MacArthur’s is a great example of a restaurant of squandered great potential. It’s offerings are those to be expected at a restaurant purporting to be high end as are it’s prices. Nevertheless, the quality of the food, though not bad, is nothing special. The service is similar to the average casual dining restaurant. What fine dining restaurant doesn’t accept American Express? Also, the attitude of the maitre d was rather arrogant. What is the summary? MacArthur’s is basically the only fine dining establishment within 20 miles of West Point. With this form of monopoly, you get complacency, arrogance, and mediocrity. That sums up MacArthur’s.
An enjoyable dining experience. Good service, good food. Yes there is a beautiful river view off of the patio. Pricey, but worth the price for lunch or dinner if you make an evening of it.
I Salute You!. Grand old hotel on the grounds of West Point – we just missed the tour and decided to have lunch in the hotel since we were already here. The building is a beautiful old brick and stone structure with a commanding view of the Hudson River from the hill on which it sits. Inside, the antique chandeliers, furniture, fireplaces, etc. give the place an air of stately importance. You can feel the history as you enter through the main door where presidents, international leaders and celebrities have tread.Seated at one of the many elegantly set tables, we elected to try the buffet. There were numerous serving tables organized in perfect formation (would you expect differently considering its location) – a line of 10 or more large round tables with a cornucopia of entrees and side dishes in silver warmers along with soups, breads, cheeses, and desserts. The presentation was royal in the high ceiling dining room with numerous chandeliers that crowned the room with a regal glow. This was an experience not to be missed. We were sorry to have missed the tour of Westpoint, but the dining experience we had at the Thayer could not have made us any happier.
