Mi Candela Revisited. The food is no better than the typical Hispanic Caribbean luncheonette counter. More expensive and less generous portions are served. The service is standard. It needs to snap. Breezy is the operative word. The wait staff has to look alive. Sadly, they are not there yet. I sense that some very fast revamps are needed to insure survival until that liquor license arrives. The problem is that this establishment has to be atypical. The long awaited grand opening brought higher expectations to all diners that anticipated it. Let us hope they turn this around. In it’s favor, Mi Candela already has survived obstacles that need not be recounted here and lived another day. Philosophers say the continuum rapidly progresses and will do so regardless. In philosophy, time does not exist. Time is merely a measure. For Mi Candela, time is everything.10 Jul, 2011Early flickering – needs stoking. I attempted a takeout order today. There is no takeout menu printed as of now. So grab a restaurant menu book. What’s that? Only large size orders are available because the large aluminum dish is the only entree container in stock. OK?! Wait time is interminable. Give a pass for now. Order arrives from the kitchen. Alright, I am set. La cuenta (the bill) should be arriving instantaneously. The tres chicas at the register are working on the bill now. Whistle while waiting. Time passes more quickly that way. Just a second here. Could this be on the house? A very rare freebie for me? No one is coming forth even though eye contact and gentle motioning was expended. Finally, the bill has been presented. Plastic? No way. With some cold cash, I can be on my way! My observations around the room during the wait confirm that there are some minor and major problems to work out as the waitstaff gains necessary experience. There was no one on duty Saturday afternoon that appeared to have any prior restaurant experience. Management might want to remedy that with some experienced influences so that the platters are sent to the right table upon leaving the kitchen. At home, my order was tasty enough, but the lechon asado easily passed as pernil. Should I assume the same in a pernil order (the pernil is pernil)? Mi esposa stated that the chicken soup was too greasy. The kitchen should be skimming the fat prior to service. Despite the poor experience, I am withholding judgement until a future visit or two. I envision some promise and the concept is solid. Good Caribbean fare has demand in Astoria.

Was so excited. To see this place finally opened .I walked in to check it out on the Grand opening , nice enough . I was actually going to start an ‘ event ‘ on facebook and have my friends and fam all meet and eat in here , however so far the reviews have me double guessing. MAYBE ANOTHER TIME GRRR…super disapopinted ! (Im getting tired of colombian food and wanted some arroz con polllo ).. Get it together please …
