I was really looking forward to try what sugar freak can offer. Specially after reading all the raving reviews about it. Unfortunately it was a let down for me, the food is just okay but there’s really nothing special or amazing about it. We ordered jambalaya which is just okay a home cooked one is way much better. We also ordered steak breakfast; what is so special about a scrambled egg with thinly sliced grilled steak? Nothing. I could have gone to any diners and no doubt my satisfaction will be met. We also ordered calamari which is too salty. The only thing that we liked is the biscuit and the popcorn alligator. Are those 2 mentioned worth coming back for? Nope. Never again to this place.

Two Forms of Muffuletta Bliss. I ordered a Muffuletta with House made olive salad, mozzarella cheese, provolone, Swiss, mortadella, genoa salami, and ham. My dining partner ordered the Vegetarian Muffuletta with House made olive salad, Portobello mushrooms, zucchini, yellow squash, red and green peppers, provolone, mozzarella, Swiss. I made the assumption that the tradional Muffuletta would naturally be the best tasting of the two. I had two bites of the Veggie Muffuletta and was surprised to discover that this was all pretty good stuff. You should forget the idea that they will taste anything like each other. Very different. The bun is similar but both are so very different I would have given it a different name. Very cool indeed. I love this place. It has lots on the menu and I will be coming back to try some of them. I could tell by the look of contentment among my fellow diners that this place is doing something right.I will tell you that when I say that this is a place I will return I really mean it. It is on 30th Ave., one stop from my place in Astoria on the N/Q line. OK, it is about six short blocks from the station but come on, it is worth it.
Two More Aficionados for SugarFreak. I have mentioned in the past that my wife is picky and will not tolerate spicy dishes well. That stated, chalk up a convert for SugarFreak. She can order plates that are not spicy and do not contain sweet peppers, onions nor tomatoes. Granted, the best offerings at SugarFreak often contain one or more of these ingredients. My elation, after many attempts for her to give SugarFreak a try, is that she wants to return in the future! Her winner was a grilled chicken salad which did come with thinly sliced tomatoes. She sent the original pounded chicken breast slices back as too salty. The servers and kitchen were most gracious and served new chicken which was grilled to retain the desired juicy moist texture. In both instances, the chicken retained good moisture, but I do agree that the original was quite salty. If you are on a special diet, just request that the kitchen be easy on the salt. On the other hand, there were few choices on the menu or the specials list that I would have eliminated on my first visit. It was one of the toughest selections that I have ever made. Finally, I trusted myself, and went with a special of pulled pork and slaw on a corn bread waffle flecked with cherry pepper pieces in the waffle batter. It was a winner, though I could not help but think that anything I chose from my laundry list would have had the same result. Wednesday, May 29th was a very fortunate day for me. We made a return visit on June 16th. Add Jambalaya to your must indulge list at SugarFreak.
