Breakfast and lunch — the only place…. Schenectady’s city fathers (and mothers) want to make the downtown 8-block strip into a walk-around place with nice shops and restaurants and so on. The Apostrophe Caf may be be the best part of the scheme. Two things impress: The menu is an ambitious caf menu — and the can-do staff makes it work. For example: Ham and Swiss — want that sandwich toasted? No problem. I’m sure there are show-times when that cannot be done so easily, but most of the time, the place is laid back and just right for coffee and a bagel or iced tea and a sandwich, a conversation or small meeting or just some time with a good book or the morning paper. I was far more impressed with the Apostrophe Caf, which delivered the goods, than I was with the chi-chi places around it that substituted provincial arrogance for can-do service.
