After listening to so many friends rate Marinos pizza among the top two or three pizza establishments in the capital district, I undoubtedly had to pay them a visit. Its a relatively small place with an adequate amount of parking for its size. You can see the pizza dough flying as soon as you enter since pizza preparation is right next to the front door. A real convenience for picking up takeout. A main kitchen for all other things Italian seems to be in the back.Pizza is available in three sizes, round 16, round 18, or square 12×17 (slices are also available). Planning on taking some home, we went with the largest, the 12-cut square. As for toppings, choices include all the standards plus broccoli, sliced tomatoes and black olives. We chose the Marinos special ($22.95) which came with sausage, mushrooms, onions, peppers, pepperoni, & anchovies.Actually my wife ordered an individual salad ($4) to start, and it was large enough to share. Also, even though we were ordering pizza our server brought us a basket of Italian bread and butter while our pizza was being made. The only beer available on draft was Coors, so we ordered bottles of Birra Moretti and Sam Adams Rebel IPA ($4.50 each). When our server brought the pizza to the table, she served each of us our first slice after requesting if we preferred a corner, edge or center slice. That was a nice touch. The bottom of the pizza was very crispy. I liked that fact, but my wife thought it was too crispy for her. By the time we each got to our second slice the bottom had lost some of that crispiness. As an aside, having a late night snack once we had the leftovers home, the crispiness was totally gone. Overall, the crust was good but not something that stood out as being especially flavorful. The sausage topping was our favorite. The pepperoni was sliced super thin and did not leave any noticeable excess of oil. Mushrooms were canned and bell peppers were still a bit crunchy. Anchovies were exactly as anyone would expect. All the flavors blended well. The place is clean and comfortable inside. Service is friendly and efficient. Forced air heating in the Winter causes the dining room to go through waves of coolness and warm blasts if you are seated near a vent. While they only take cash, there is an ATM in the back by the restrooms. Ive always believed that pizza is a personal preference. So I dont think Id rate this one as highly as my friends, but yes it is still a good pizza.
