Only a few places serve authentic Mexican food and this place is one of them. Located on the university hill, this place is a gem. Loved the food, the atmosphere, opened late night. Everything about this place is perfect. Hope to visit again.
$11 margarita! Really ? Food was OK, but dinner for two was $60. Not a lot of value for your money here. Probably not going back. Not sure what the attraction is.
Great food, even better service. Visited on New Years Eve, and had a great experience. Food was cooked to perfection and had just the right amount of flavoring. I love that they expanded the seating area, so many more people can enjoy all that Alto Cinco has to offer. But the best part of my night was the exceptional service offered by our waiter, Colin. He was easy to talk to and always making sure we were happy and answered all our questions. I know I am not the easiest to please when dining out but I can honestly say that Colin was one of the best in the industry that I have come across in quite some time.
New and improved, and just about perfect!. Alto Cinco used to be this little hole-in-the-wall joint where you went to endure long waits and crowded conditions. Now, things have changed….but only for the better! Alto’s has expanded into the store next door, giving it two new, spacious dining rooms. Even the sidewalks outside and Westcott Street itself have been redone by the city, adding plenty of clean outdoor seating and making it much easier to park. If you haven’t visited in a while, drop by to enjoy the new Alto Cinco. And if you’ve never been there, what the heck are you waiting for?Ambiance/Dcor – 9/10As mentioned, the big problem with Alto’s used to be the tiny, crowded dining room. Those days are gone, with the original bar/dining room now supplemented by two large, airy, spacious rooms. The place feels cleaner and lighter. Add to that all of the traditional south-of-the-border themed knick-knacks on the walls as well as the benches outside for take-out customers to wait and you’ve got an interesting, fun, enjoyable dining experience.Service – 7/10As noted in other reviews, the only possible knock against the new Alto’s is the length of time it will take your food to get to the table. When a friend and I visited on a recent Friday afternoon, we were seated just before the lunch rush. A friendly, efficient, professional waitress got us set up and took our orders. Like the rest of Alto’s service staff, she was young, stylish, and friendly but not overly talkative. This may be what other reviewers mean when they write about the service staff being too hip or cool or all wrapped up in themselves. Well, they’re not. The ideal server is supposed to be pleasant and efficient, not your buddy.Though we had beaten the lunch rush in, we still waited a half hour to forty minutes for our food. I suspect that the issue is with the kitchen, which cooks everything fresh and to order but was not expanded along with the restaurant. This might have to be addressed by management, as I have no idea how this kitchen can keep up during a busy dinner rush with take-out customers as well. Drinks – 10/10Alto’s doesn’t feature the largest beer or wine list of any restaurant you’ll find, but what’s there is quality in both taste and presentation. The menu includes both tap and bottled beers, both foreign and domestic micro-brews. There are no mass-market American beers here, so if you crave a Bud you’ll have to go elsewhere. The menu includes the style of beer as well as the ABV (alcohol by volume). True beer lovers will be in heaven. The wine list is similar. Selections come from all the major wine-producing regions, including Argentina, California, Oregon, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. The makeup (for blends) and the palate are listed along with the wines. They even make their own Sangria, either red or white, to order. Food – 20/20I don’t often give out perfect scores, but this place deserves it. The menu is extensive, emphasizes fresh ingredients and dishes prepared to order, and is much more reminiscent of authentic Mexican food than the Tex/Mex style you’ll find in other places.Among my favorites are the Chile Rellenos, the enchiladas, and the Mexican Pizza. Today’s choice was the pizza with whole wheat crust and shredded chicken. This pie was thick with fresh veggies and chicken, covered in just the right amount of cheese, and served on a crisp (not burned) tortilla shell. The chipotle puree that they use for sauce lends a smoky flavor and just the right amount of heat. One of my favorite ingredients, which also turns up in the salads they serve with most dishes, is the pickled onions. Sweet and sour, without a hint of a bite, just delightful. My friend ordered enchiladas, and reported them to be among the best he’s ever had. I know by experience he was right. His fresh salad with lime vinaigrette was wonderful, as was the side of beans (black or borracho, never refried). For appetizers we ordered chips and salsa as well as jalapeno cornbread. Both are as good and fresh as you will ever get. The chips are house made and salted, and the salsa is the best I’ve ever had in my life – fresh and chunky, with tomato and garlic and onion and cilantro….just outstanding. The cornbread is smooth without being lardy, tastes of corn, and has just a hint of heat and actual jalapeno flavor. Lunch for two, with appetizers, drinks, tax, and 20% tip, came to @ $60.Total score: 46/50, or an A.You’ll love Alto Cinco if you like fun restaurants with great food and drinks.Avoid it if you are in a real hurry or if you prefer Tex/Mex foods with lots of cheese and refried beans.
Wonderful and unique restaurant- California burrito all the way! Yum!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE! One of the best in Syracuse. Very friendly for vegan/vegetarian and gluten free! Only issue is the small space, but the service and atmosphere are great. A+!
