Worth a try- especially on Monday!. The sushi wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but the half-price Monday deal was a steal! 10 plates for 3 people came to less than $40 dollars including tax and tip. Also, the modern decor along with the fun and interactive conveyor belt makes eating at Sakanaya an experience to be had. The rolls that they offer are very standard, ranging from simple tuna rolls to shrimp tempura and spider rolls, and special rolls with sliced fruit, house sauces, and lots of tobiko. The presentation of the sushi ion the individual colored plates was very pretty and the ratio of fish to rice was nice. The rice was a little lacking in flavor, but the texture was nice and not overly packed. Besides sushi, the conveyor belt also carries other dishes like miso soup, seaweed salad, dumplings, edamame, and tempura bananas and cheesecake bites as dessert. Just as a warning, the line can be rather long on Mondays, so if you don’t care to wait around be sure to avoid the peak dinner hours.
Fun. There’s nothing super original about the sushi, but the staff are very friendly, the prices are extremely reasonable (especially on half-price Mondays….although discount raw fish does sound somewhat wrong 🙂 ) and the food is good. The conveyer-belt side is very modern and unique. A great place for a quick lunch or a relaxing dinner.
Very poor food. Visiting town and we love Sushi. This was the worst Sushi I have ever had. Fish was still frozen in the sashimi. The rolls were sloppily made and most had a nasty mayonaise on top. I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. Bad.
I’m a fan. It’s not the most amazing sushi I’ve ever eaten, but it’s a fun place to go with friends. The sushi is good but could be fresher. The conveyor belt sushi is not a new concept, but as far as I know it’s the only sushi bar of this kind in Syracuse. I only ever go on Mondays anymore because everything is fifty percent off. Also they do pricing based on the color of the plates that you grab from the belt. It’s very easy to know exactly how much you’re spending which is always nice.
Sakanaya. Make sure you go on Monday it’s really crowed and you may have to wait but it’s worth it because all the food is 1/2 the price it usually is. I like most of what they serve though I don’t care for the spicy stuff.
Meh. It’s OK and the prices are reasonable. The conveyor belt thing is always fun. But this is very American sushi: fancy-fancy, but not very tasty. The nigiri was really not nice; perhaps they have trouble getting high-quality fish? The rolls were very pretty, but all fancied up with spicy mayo and other drizzles that obscured the basics. If you love novelty, you’ll have fun here. If you love sushi, it’s not for you.
I’ve been there a couple times and it’s best to go on a Monday because it’s half price on all food. And if you don’t see anything you like the cooks will make you a custom plate at your request I highly recomend it to anyone especially adventerous eaters
