Syracuse, New York is not the type of place most people associate with excellent food and beer. But like any city of significant population, good food and beer are present, it is just a matter of knowing where to go. And one place that I recommend from my visit to Syracuse is The Evergreen.The Evergreen was my stop for lunch on a weekend afternoon and when I visited, there were very few people present, since they had just opened. My wife and I decided to sit at the bar and we started off with appetizers and drinks. The beer is in wide abundance at The Evergreen and this was evident both from the taps behind the bar to the large display of beers on tap, located on the back wall. I liked the large display in the back because it makes it easy for those in the dining room to see what is available, but there was one issue with it: The display doesnt indicate the beers style. It shows the beer name, state where it is brewed, brewery that makes it, alcohol level, and serving size. Basically, everything you could want to know, except the style. So, unless the style is already part of the beers name, you wont know and will have to ask.I wanted to try some local brew so I ordered flight samplers. I love the wide variety of beer options served here and like I said, the beer selection is better than average and is easily one of the establishments strong points. They also have a full-service bar and can mix up just about anything you like. With the food, we ordered a variety of options and found the items fabulous. I loved my burger and side of bean soup and the appetizer consisting of loaded fries was amazing as well, as were the deviled eggs. The only problem for me is that I overdid things, filled up too quickly, and couldnt finish all of my food. I hate to leave food on the table, but since I was traveling, I couldnt take anything with me. I have a hearty appetite so anytime I can eat this much and end up having to stop because Im too full, it really says something about the quality of the food. The interior of The Evergreen isnt anything amazing. It consists of wooden tables and chairs and nothing that really grabs your attention on the walls or anyplace else. But with such excellent food and beer, I doubt you will care. I know I sure didnt mind and considering the high quality of everything I tried, and the amazing service, this establishment earns an easy five star rating. greatbeernow.com
