A full service restaurant within a supermarket. Sure, youve been in the supermarket and seen where they sell slices of pizza, sandwiches, maybe some wings too and possibly even some meatloaf with gravy. The clerk is paid for the food and then the customer carries it to a table where it is enjoyed with maybe a soda, a cup of coffee, a bottle of water, or a half pint of milk. Possibly youve done this yourself, right?Well, thats old school! How about having a hostess great you and offer you the choice of a table or a booth? How about having wait staff bring you a menu and take your order? Would you like to have a glass of wine or a draft beer with your order… WHAT!!!? Did I say there was WINE in a NYS grocery store??? And you can even drink your beer while eating the food that youre about to purchase in a NYS grocery store? Am I dreaming?Well heres the scoop! The Chefs Grill at the Market Bistro by Price Chopper in Latham is where this dream has come true. Its a separate section of the Market Bistro, not to be confused with the adjacent Bistro Boulevard where about a dozen food stations are set up to purchase burgers, sushi, pizza, fish fries, soups, salads, etc., that you can carry out of the store or carry to the common find-a-table and seat-yourself area like any other supermarket. The Chefs Grill has its own liquor license, so you can be served and drink beer or wine with your meal. You can even choose to sit at a counter and watch your meal being prepared. We chose a booth and each started with Pilsner glasses of Keegans Mothers Milk Stout ($4.75). I didnt study the lunch side of the menu since we were there at dinner time, so I cant tell you what was offered on the lunch menu. The dinner menu has primarily steak, fish, and pasta entrees, but there also is a kids menu.Because they indicated that their Signature Special is Tri-Tip Sirloin Steak, I thought I would give it a try. It is available in two portion sizes, large ($19) and regular ($15) . I ordered the regular, and prompted by the menu, selected mashed potatoes and asparagus. My wife chose the Grilled Shrimp Taco ($13). The menu also says that entrees are served with fresh baked bread from our bakery. For some reason, the bread was never served to us, but in all honesty, I didnt realize that until just now.Our server returned to inform me that unfortunately, they did not have any mashed potatoes and asked if the chefs rice pilaf would be ok. I agreed, and we began our enjoyment of our beers. I want to make a point of mentioning that the beer was served at an excellent temperature, not too cold, so all the flavors were coming through. The regular size order of steak I received was a goodly portion. Five nice slices of medium-rare sirloin that had been marinated, rubbed with spices, finished on their char grill, and served with sides of pan jus and a horseradish sauce. The rice pilaf was nothing special, but the asparagus was tender, had wonderful char marks and a delicious char flavor that was even further enhanced when I dipped pieces in the horseradish sauce. The steak was tender and best with the pan jus.My wifes Taco dish was served deconstructed. Along with five average sized shrimp, her plate had two flour tortillas, cilantro-lime rice , roasted corn salsa, and shredded lettuce. Ramekins of guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream were served on the side. There was no way anyone was going to be able to put all those ingredients into just two tortillas. At least three or even four CORN tortillas would have been better. Otherwise, the only thing really missing was some spiciness. Even the offer of a bottle of hot sauce would have been nice. Our server Brittney was very attentive, cheerful, and sought out answers to questions that we had. The evening chef even stopped by our table to see if we enjoyed our meal. I thought the overall value of the meal was quite good. As an added incentive to dining here, the cost of your food, not your alcohol nor your tip, counts toward Price Choppers Fuel AdvantEdge promotion. I wonder if I could just stop and have a beer sometime grocery shopping can be sooo stressful at times.
