Always fresh and tasty. Staff is friendly and very attentive. Some of the best mojitos around. The fajita nachos are great. Really everything we’ve tried no matter when we’ve been has been excellent
Beware of American cheese. Oh, I so want to like El Charro, especially to get some tex-mex variety our usual Mexican dig lacks. The salsa is watery but tasty, the chorizo dip was excellent, and the enchiladas could have been great– except they use white American cheese as their cheese topping of choice. If you love American cheese then this is no problem, but while I’m okay with it in grilled cheese sandwiches, the taste way overpowers the flavors of the rest of the food and frankly ruined it for me. I don’t know if American cheese is commonly used in other Mexican food, but I didn’t expect it and definitely didn’t like it.Still, because of the tasty meat and potential, we will go again and try something without cheese or ask them to hold it, but consider this a warning I wish I had gotten before going for the first time!
YUM, this place is great, just what Latham needed. Look out Mexican Radio, you’ve got a rival that I would say is winning. Food here was delicious, Mojito’s were good (we asked for not so sweet and they were very accommodating). I highly recommend the Chorizo Dip, really really good. My husband and I ordered the Grande Special for $10.79, what a deal. Everything on it was great and you will be amazed by how much food they provide. We have now found a local restaurant in Latham that we will go to regularly, prices are very reasonable and everything was great. Our waitress, Lola, was very nice and bartender very accommodating. Try El Charro, you will like it!
Good food and atmosphere.. This is neither home-cooking nor high-end Mexican cooking. Just looking at the menu will tell you that they are looking to be successful. The items offered are what most Americans typically look for when they go to a Mexican restaurant… with one exception… there was no chicken mole anywhere to be found on the menu.We were promptly served a complimentary basket of warm chips and salsa while we studied the beverage menu. The salsa had some flavor, but no spicy bite. To their credit, they provide three different hot sauces on the table along with the salt and pepper. We found that mixing a small amount of the green habanero sauce into the salsa provided the kick and additional flavor we were looking for.The restaurant has only been open for a few days so it was not surprising to see a sign upon entering offering a special on their Margaritas – $6.99 for a Jumbo size, slightly less for the regular size. My wife was in the process of ordering the Lime Margarita when she asked our server if they also had sangria. He said yes, and suggested that she try a Sangria Margarita. I then chose the Lime variety and noticed that the beverage menu listed the margaritas by color, green for lime, red for pomegranate, blue for curacao, etc. The goblets were not only jumbo, they were also very heavy. Rimmed in blue salt and served on the rocks, both drinks were just ok. The sangria had a touch of sweetness and the lime offered a bit of pucker. We didnt ask which of the many tequilas that they sell was used to make them, and I didnt notice any effect from the alcohol, but my wife said she did. The menu seems quite extensive, offering twelve dishes just under the Seafood heading, and there are plenty of meat and vegetarian offerings. We decide to concentrate on the House Specialties section in order to see what the kitchen staff were capable of. I ordered the Grand Special ($10.79) which gave me the opportunity to taste a chalupa, a chile relleno, an enchilada, a burrito, and a taco, all served with Spanish rice and fried beans. This offering was so Grand that it was served on two separate dishes. Truly, an exceptional value in the quantity/price category and an excellent opportunity to taste a variety of preparations. The chalupa had some guacamole on top along with the beans and lettuce. I would have preferred a thicker tortilla as the base instead of a tostada, and while the creamy guacamole was acceptable, it could not hold a jalapeno to the slightly chunky style that my wife makes. The Taco had a good amount of ground beef in it and it would become apparent after tasting any of the other items with beef that cinnamon is used in all of their beef dishes. While I like cinnamon, I was beginning to tire of the flavor after awhile. The enchilada and the burrito were both filled with the ground beef. My wife thought the cinnamon flavor was a bit too strong to start with. The Spanish rice was ok and the fried beans were flavorful and not runny. The chile relleno was filled with cheese and more salty than any of the other items on my plate. It was tasty, however. My wife chose the Guadalajara Special ($9.49) a tamal, and two taquitos Mexicanos with nacho chips on the bottom with cheese, chicken, rice, beans, and beef, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole. This seemed to be the only dish on the menu that included tamal. Otherwise, it could be ordered A LA CARTA. The tamal was filled with chicken and the surrounding masa had a good corn flavor. It needed the sour cream, however, to add a bit of moisture. The taquitos Mexicanos are rolled tortillas, fried and filled with chicken or beef. I dont know what makes them any different than the Flautas which are also offered as part of the House Specialties. The taquitos tasted a bit greasy while hot, and more so at the end of the meal.Overall, the food was good enough to encourage us to return and try some of the other dishes. The fish tacos sounded interesting as did a couple of the soups and the lunch menu. Our service was good, friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is very pleasant. Did I mention how good the value seems to be here?
