Used to be great, but now….. I frequented Reel Seafood 4-5 times a year when traveling for work in the past 8 years It was never mind-blowing, but I was always very pleased with my meal and left satisfied. Having just visited for the first time since they refurbished and changed the menu, I won’t be going back. I ordered the short ribs and scallops, neither worth writing more about. The clam chowder tasted like any generic chowder. This place used to be great, but I’d avoid unless you enjoy paying big prices for mediocre food.
Reliably Good Quality Fish.. We were surprised at how busy the parking lot was for a Wednesday evening, and as we looked around the tables that were almost filled to capacity, we had to wonder if there was a convention in town. The patrons did not appear to be families, and most were in business attire. Fortunately, we were promptly seated at a two-top.Much has been said about the amount of money that was invested in rehabbing and updating the environment when the restaurant changed hands from father to daughter. While everything looked clean, we couldn’t help but feel that mostly what it got was a new paint job. But isnt clean adequate for an environment?Oysters and beer is always a good start to a dinner. There were five varieties of oysters available that evening, and while we tried to decide what combination of them would provide each of us with an equal number, and possibly still take advantage of the cost-benefit of ordering in half-dozen increments, we placed our order for pints of Bear Naked ($5.75) and a Davidson Brothers ($5.25) beer. Our server returned to let us know that the chef was not recommending one of the oyster varieties, so we settled on a total of eight ($19). All were fresh and cleanly shucked loose from their shell. My wife ordered a Wasabi pea-Crusted Alaskan Halibut ($27) and I had the Crispy Atlantic Salmon Special ($23). The halibut was served with baby heirloom carrots, ancient grains, wilted spinach, and yuzu miso. The fish was cooked perfectly, but seemed to lack flavor. There also did not seem to be a noticeable spiciness coming from the wasabi coating. The salmon was also cooked to perfection and came with Yukon gold mashed potatoes, sweet corn-fennel relish, beurre blanc, and basil oil. It was a tasty dish, but I think the plating could have used a bit more imagination.Service was good considering the number of customers present. While nothing really wowed us, it still is a nice place to go for good fish choices if you are not inclined to cook at home.
You will not be disappointed. Always on the road and look for a non-box place to eat. I got a referral at the hotel and they were spot on. I sat at the bar and met a couple of long term customers. The staff makes the experience complete. Priced right, very taisty Kale Caesar salad, and the Wasabi Pea-Crusted Alaskan Halibut were excellent. I will be back.On your next outing, try the local independent business. They will appreciate your patronage and this one will not disappoint you!
Final decision still out. As a very frequent visitor to Reel Seafood in the past (at least 2x per month) my first visit since the reopening was good….the second…not so good. My dining companion ordered the same meal both times, the shortribs and scallops. Though the taste was wonderful, the serving was modest,( yes- we appreciate that this is partly a style decision.) The second time the portion was even more modest, with the plural form of shortrib s and scallop s a true stretch. On top of that, the accompanying risotto/and veg puree was but a smear on the plate, the first visit they were more obvious. So-consistency seems to be a problem right out of the gate. My selections were more reasonable in portion allotment. The first visit I had the cioppino, which was very good. The second visit 1/2 dozen oyster and the the mussel appetizer. Both very good as well. I expect we’ll give it one more try before our final decision.
You Won’t Be Rushed Out the Door. We had planned to go to a seafood place across the street but after experiencing their parking lot fiasco and a wait, we went to the Reel Seafood Co. for the first time and, we will definitely be going back! Finally, a restaurant that understands people want to have a fun, relaxing time out with loved ones when they go out (our service was excellent). Four people, appetizers/dinner/desert/drinks – very reasonably priced. The food portions were just right. Lemon Crumb Haddock was delicious but the Mahi wasn’t a little too heavy – like a spicy barbeque sauce. The deserts were delicious.
Really just not that good. New to town and love good seafood…this place really missed the mark. Service was eh…and the food was really not good especially for the price! Sent back the ahi tuna dish my hubby ordered, it was dry and very unflavorful! Its raw fish people how is it dry? Over frozen is my guess….freezer burned. I ordered the crab stuffed haddock….dry and also no flavor. Dry because it was over cooked. The side roasted potatoes I had however were pretty tasty and the bread that was brought to the table was hot and delicious! But that was it for good food. The first glass of white wine I ordered was warm, but the replacement one was nice and chilled. Save your money and go somewhere else.
Wonderful!. I come here for every significant birthday in my family and it’s always such a treat. Last time I got the Mahi Mahi with rissoto with a ginger reduction sauce…excellent!
