Go ahead, sit back, relax, and enjoy your drink.. The Tavern at the Desmond Hotel needs to be addressed separately from the hotel, the conference center, and the two main restaurants – Scrimshaw or Simpson’s Grille. The atmosphere is much more lounge like with a bar, couches with coffee tables, and regular two and four-top tables. The two-tops have high-back leather chairs while the four-tops have early American spindle-back chairs.Earlier incarnations of this area had entertainment and dancing. But I don’t think that’s likely any longer since the dance floor has been replaced with carpeting and tables.Because we had stopped at the hotel desk to buy a gift certificate, we decided to stop here for a small bite to eat since the atmosphere is so warm and inviting, . There were only about two or three people at the bar and maybe two other tables were occupied. There seemed to be only one server (Robin) who was covering the floor and she approached us as soon as we entered. We told her we were trying to decide if we would stay to eat and she turned on her charm and convinced us that we should stay. The menu is the typical more lite fare, pub style, but a note at the bottom indicates that you may also order from the full menu available at Simpson’s Grille. We started with a couple of 20 ounce beers, a Saratoga IPA ($5) and a Black & Blue ($6.25; Guinness & Blue Moon for the uninitiated). Smaller size glasses were also available. Our choice of lite fare was a Burger ($10.95) with bacon and cheese ($1 extra for each) and the Colonial Club with turkey ($12.95). Two side orders of french fries ($1.75 each) were ordered in place of potato chips. My burger came out medium-well instead of medium-rare, but it was still nice and juicy and had a delicious char flavor. There was no need to complain. My wife’s club had the driest turkey breast we’ve ever tasted, excluding some of our home roasting, yet the turkey still had a nice fresh roasted flavor. I would have requested and slapped some mayo on it, but I guess the Black & Blue accomplished the same purpose. The fries were just fine.Despite the issues just mentioned, this is a really nice place to sit back, relax with a drink and a friend or two or three. They do have a couple of TV screens for those who follow sports.
