Let me start by saying Sunhees is very reasonably priced and serves authentic Korean dishes. Some of the herbs, eggs and vegetables even come from their own farm. Thus the name with Farm and Kitchen. The business is carved out of two adjacent storefronts. One side has the dining room and the other has a bar serving beer, wine, soju, and some sake. There are a couple of tables in addition to the bar on the bar side, and this is the main entrance for the restaurant. The sides are connected at the back where the food is ordered at a counter, almost cafeteria style. Everything is freshly prepared in the kitchen. There are no steam tables like in a real cafeteria. We ordered a Scallion Pancake ($8) with seafood vs. kimchi and Mandoo ($5) as appetizers along with the Soft Tofu Stew ($11) and the Spicy Pork Rice Bowl ($12) for our entres. We chose to not order alcoholic beverages from the bar and were informed that Lemon Water was available from a small metal cistern in the dining room.Shortly after seating ourselves and drawing some of that delicious lemon water, all of our food was served at the same time. Luckily, our table was large enough to handle all of it.The Scallion Pancake is made with sticky rice, wheat and egg batter and served with a side of soy dipping sauce. The seafood in this case was chopped shrimp, and the pancake was sliced into small squares, easy to pick up by hand and dip into the soy sauce. It was very flavorful with a nice mix of textures from the softness of the pancake and the crunch of the perfectly cooked shrimp pieces. I was first introduced to mandoo almost fifty years ago while stationed in Korea. I then spent years trying to find these meat and vegetable filled, pan-fried dumplings in the U.S. I wont bore you with the details, but I will let you know that these are among the best that Ive eaten over the last 30 years. The menu said they came with vermicelli noodles but I didnt see any unless they were also chopped up inside the mandoo. But these dumplings were pan-fried to a beautiful golden brown on the outside with a delicious filling. You dont even need the sauce. I could pop these down all night long.My wifes Soft Tofu Stew had the lightest and silkiest textured tofu we have ever encountered. The broth was rich and flavorful with garlic, green squash, onion, scallion, an egg, and this time we chose kimchi over the seafood. It also came with a large side of purple rice and a very small ramekin of their house made kimchi. While the menu displayed a hot pepper next to the listing it was not very spicy by our standard. If you like spicy, you might want to request that they up the spice for you a bit. In any event, its a really great Winter dish and very filling. My entre choice of the Spicy Pork Rice Bowl was more spicy than my wifes stew and just right. The pork and sauted onions, along with garlic and peppers were served over their purple rice in a nice hot bowl, not hot enough to make the rice sizzle, but hot enough to keep the meal warm right up until the last mouthful. I really enjoyed this dish and would gladly order it again. The ramekin of kimchi may be small, but it is excellent kimchi. This may be more of a self-service style restaurant, but the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet the owner, Jinah Kim, ask her about the farm and her familys involvement. Oh yeah, I almost forgot. They also have some Korean groceries available for sale.
