Fun atmosphere, but the employees are racist. Jim Crowe still rules in this place. The lengths they go to in order to keep certain races out, or to not let them in to begin with, are unreal. I thought America had moved beyond that, but this place is a throwback.
July 6, 2015OK, I know I said I couldnt get my wife to return to The Ruck after her first experience, but just like some places are closed on Sunday, there are also a number of places closed on Mondays. And so it was that we were not able to dine at a location that was walking distance from The Ruck. Her first comment was that it looked a lot better with the light now coming through all the glass doors leading to the sidewalk patio. Then she said it even smells a lot better! ;-)We had arrived early enough that we were ahead of the trivia fans who would be coming later for an evening of fun. The bartender let us know that we would normally need to place our order at the bar, but since it wasnt busy yet he was willing to serve us at our table until the crowd starting coming in.Pints of Alpines Captain Stout and Bells Quinannan ($5 each) kept us occupied while we reviewed the menu. I then suggested probably the most sacrilegious item on the menu which we had never, ever, had before at any place that was known for its wings I ordered Boneless Wings ($10). Call me what you like, but they were actually quite good. They were crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and flavorful with the medium spicing. My wife ordered the Napa Cowgirl ($12) while I had This Little Piggie ($10). The Cowgirl is surprisingly a chicken burger, with guacamole, roasted red pepper, spinach, chipotle mayo and topped with a fried egg. Again the chicken was juicy and all the flavors blended nicely. The Piggie is appropriately pulled pork served with some kale, bacon slaw, cheddar, and some IPA BBQ sauce. Another tasty sandwich.By the time we were ready to leave the place was almost filled and people were anxious to join our table to the adjacent group of trivia aficionados. The question remaining is whether Ill ever get the wife to return. My guess is that theres a better chance now than before.May 13, 2015Some disappointment on a return trip.. Wow, its been over two years since Ive been to the Ruck. I havent been able to convince my wife to return after her first visit because she thought it was too much of a dive in spite of the excellent selection of beers. So I convinced one of my more recently retired friends to join me for a lunch meeting.First, I feel obliged to say that they have totally rebuilt the front entrance over the last couple of years so that it now looks like a college hangout that you might want to visit. With the front windows open to the floor it now even allows the inside to be totally refreshed from the all night drinking that Im confident continues to occur. We started with a couple of Maine Brewery selections since they were being featured later that evening. King Titus Porter ($5/10 oz.; 7.5 abv) and Mean Old Tom Ale Stout ($6/10 oz.; 6.5 abv). Mean Old Tom was the most flavorful of the two with dominant coffee and chocolate flavors. We split an order of Wings ($10.50/ten), extra crispy with medium sauce. We ordered them that way because Colleen said we should! The sauce was certainly hot enough for a medium but the drumsticks were a bit dryer than we would have liked. The wings, which never have as much meat, were oddly enough more moist than the drumsticks. Maybe we should not have asked for extra crispy? We both ended up ordering the Smokey and the Bandit Wrap ($10). Roast turkey and smoked Gouda with garlic red pepper aioli, spinach and grilled onions. There was a lot of turkey, but overall it was dry. We tried dipping it into the blue cheese dressing left over from the wings, but that just wasnt enough. Both of us ended up taking half of our wrap home. My wife agreed that the turkey wraps were dry as she ate the half I brought home after adding some mayonnaise to it. Somehow, I dont think this convinced her to return. She really should give it another try.Service from the staff was really friendly and accommodating. The excellent beer selection is the only other thing that saved this trip.

Te ruck has one of the best craft beer selections in the capital region. They frequently have beer events and the wings are some of the best I’ve had outside of Buffalo.
