What a Nice Surprise. We were wandering through the tiny hamlet of Rosendale and came across the Alternative Baker which has been in this location for many years! Everything is fresh baked. We shared cookies and a scone. The one thing that wasn’t great was the vegan cookie, which was pretty dry and tasteless. Still, I would return to try the focaccia, which looked yummy.

Great bread. I stopped here yesterday on my way home from my last day of work before moving to Thailand. I had a mini focaccia. It was SO good! I only wish I had found Alternative Baker earlier. I would have made it a regular stop between work and home. Even though Rosendale is a little out of the way, it’s definitely worth the stop.
Alternative for the Better…. The best bread on this side of the Atlantic is made here. His boule breads are to die for! He also makes delicious breakfast sandwiches, bakery lunch sandwiches and focaccia, vegan soups, gluten free cookies, yummy cakes, fresh fruit filled- fat and juicy muffins and much, much more. I am always impressed with what I put into my mouth, he’s got a magical touch…
A definite for anyone gluten-free. Finding gluten-free treats outside of NYC (that tastes good) is a challenge – but the Alternative Baker in Rosendale is the exception. My wife is extremely sensitive to gluten and gets sick easily with cross-contamination – but she has never had a reaction from their baked goods. The owner obviously takes great care to prevent cross-contamination. Make sure you try their GF peanut butter cookies, chocolate truffle torte, meringue cookies and the soup of the day. Totally delicious!
