If you’re in Asheville downtown then this place is a must! Great service and lovely hosts. The food was great and the whole thing was a unique experience. Highly recommend doing the shared platter.
Unimpressive and unauthentic. I have visited the restaurant twice now, as I believe that you can’t make a sound judgement based on a single visit. The second visit will be my last. The first thing my dinner companion and I noticed on the first visit was that commonly available draft beers were priced at $6.00/pint. That immediately gives one a bad impression, or at least makes you feel just a little slighted. The draft beer prices have since been dropped to $5.00/pint. A good decision by the owners.I found the chicken dish enjoyable, but the beef ribs that my companion ordered were a very low quality cut of meat. Perhaps chopped up flank steak or something similar. It was incredibly tough and after trying a couple of bites I was glad that I did not make the mistake of ordering it. Additionally, the vegetable sides were given out in small portions. They tasted good and I would have liked to have more of that to compliment my meat heavy meal. On the second visit, I stuck with what I knew I could enjoy (the chicken dish). My companions ordered the lamb this time, and as we had been told 30 minutes earlier that they only had 3 servings left, and a number of people came into the restaurant and ordered before us, I got suspicious when they returned to our party to take our order, and the owner told us there were 3 lamb dishes available. What arrived in the guise of lamb was either low quality beef, or poorly prepared, low quality lamb. We were a party of 10 and the only people who left the restaurant pleased with their selections were the vegetarians. Also, I find it really hard to buy all the ‘authentic’ talk. It seemed more contrived than many of Asheville’s featured spots, and that’s saying something.
Average food, didn’t come close to what my expectations were.. When I first moved to Asheville four years ago, the only place serving Ethiopian food was De Soto lounge on Tuesday evenings. While the food wasn’t great, it was enough to make me come back every so often to have more. A couple years ago I found out that there were plans for an authentic Ethiopian restaurant. To say I was ecstatic to hear the news was an understatement. Patiently, I followed Addissae’s Facebook page anticipating the day I could finally get a good Ethiopian meal. I decided to check out the place for dinner a couple weeks ago. I was hoping that the time between opening and me visiting would be enough for the chef to perfect the dishes on the menu. Sadly, I was let down by what Addissae had to offer in the form of Ethiopian cuisine. A friend and I ordered the vegetarian and meat platters to get a good assortment of different foods offered by Addissae. The service was spot on, and our food was brought to us more quickly than I had expected, so far, so good. As others have said before, the prices of beer are outrageous. I’m sorry, but paying $6 for a beer that I can get for $4 around the corner is ridiculous. The food, itself, was rather bland. I have made yellow split-peas they were much better than what Addissae was offering. Other items on the platter were kale and red lentils. The red lentils were cooked so long they they were the consistency of ketchup when they got to the table. The kale was tasty but nothing memorable. The meat and vegetarian platters had the same items minus one having beef, limiting the different types of food available. My expectations for this restaurant were high, and I left feeling disappointed by what it had to offer. I really want this restaurant to do well, but it will take some major changes to the menu to keep this restaurant viable in a town filled with so many delicious places to eat. I’ll try the place one more time hoping for the best. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Good but not Great. I have eaten great Ethiopian food in various major cities across the U.S and have even been to Ethiopia where i ate the Real deal. I really want this restaurant to be successful as we don’t have any other Ethiopian restaurant though I have to say that the food really can improve a lot in terms of quality. Its all about the Chef who cooks it. The injera was not great. Not what I am use to eating. I ordered the Vegi option and it was seriously lacking compared to what I have eaten even in other US cities like NY/DC/Charlotte. The quantity was also very little for the price. I had no issues with service even though they were busy when i ate their. They were very polite and helpful.
Good not great. I love Ethiopian food! I was anxious to try this restaurant. It’s about time we have an Ethiopian restaurant in Asheville! We ordered the vegetable platter and an order of beef tibs. First let me say that for me the injera is very important. It’s the like the bread to any sandwich. I was not impressed with the injera at Addissea. The pieces we got fell apart (crumbled in my hand). The veggies were good but were lacking seasoning. The highlight was the beef tibs. Very tender! I want this restaurant to succeed. I want to want to come back for dinner. I will probably give it one more chance in the future, but I’m not running out the door to eat there anytime soon.
I am Vegan & i like this place. I had the Vegetarian sampler platter for one. They reasured me that it was all Vegan. Although the waiter could not gurantee that the meal was all organic… it was Very tasty. Thumbs up!
