Having given up on ever finding even half-decent Thai curry in Asheville, I decided to give the pad thai at Champa a go. It was…incredibly unexciting pad thai. Absolutely no heat and no flavor. With a whopping two pieces of broccoli in the tofu & broccoli version. There was plenty of tofu, but it tasted like if you took a block of plain, firm tofu from the grocery store and took a bite out of that. Asheville, why is your Thai so terrible? Hope (and Thai cravings) spring eternal, so I’m sure I’ll give yet another sure-to-be disappointing place a try, but it won’t be Champa.

Friendly staff. Great vegan pho but make sure you ask for vegan broth.

Confusion with the Fusion. Another trip downtown to sample one of the Asian restaurants in the small cluster of that particular stretch on Biltmore Ave. It had been a while since Id had a yellow curry (Im usually more inclined toward a green, or massaman) and the weather was just cool enough that I didnt feel too guilty for eating a dish that has potatoes AND rice in it. As for the misses, she never passes up a chance at larb and this was to be no exception. Our miso soup arrived shortly after we passed our wishes along and it was nice; not too much salt like so many places do to it. After a bit the rest of the goods arrived and you know what that means. Or so I thought. But the Fox had a look of disillusionment on her face and it was easy to see why. What was sitting before her was not larb. What it looked like, to both of us, were three ground beef tacos served in lettuce in lieu of tortillas. Why the chicken looked like ground beef was just one of a handful of mysteries regarding this dish. Where was the lemongrass, shallots, herbs, lime juice, toasted rice? I took a bite and yes, it tasted like a taco seasoned in hoisin sauce. It was alright but certainly not larb. As for ol’ Drexler mans bowl; not bad, not great. They certainly got my requested heat level just right (spicy with just a little mercy), the chicken tasted fresh and was generously applied. The choice of using thin strips of sweet potato instead of russet chunks actually worked quite well and the onions were also cut in thin strips which is fine by me. My one complaint would be that the heavy hand with the chicken broth overwhelmed any flavor the curry might have delivered. So while it certainly wasnt bad, it wasnt the knock out punch that I have been desperately searching for in AVL proper. As for everything else; our lovely server was all smiles and helpfulness and that lent well to the tranquil environment of the restaurant. As to whether or not we would return? I guess anything is possible.Grade: C (the big windows that open out onto the sidewalk are a nice touch) drexlermcstyles.tumblr.com

The menu said that my choice was spicy, but my husband’s was not. Unfortunately the chef had it reversed. Both were quite tasty but there was no heat at all to my Thai Basil Beef, and my husband was unable to eat his Orange Peel Beef. Our server was quite attentive ( the place was almost deserted) so he came over, and when we told him he called the chef over. The chef was very nice, and immediately offered to make my husband some more with no spice. It arrived after a very short wait and we both were happy with our orange peel beef, plus my first entree to take home for lunches the next days. It may be a different story when the place is crowded, but overall it was a nice experience and we would go back. What we like the most about it is that it was nice quiet. Even if it were full of customers I think the acoustics would keep the noise reasonable. The music was not blaring and not too intrusive, which is so very hard to find these days

BEST CURRY I’VE EVER HAD. I had the Fresh Basil Spring Rolls, Tum Yum with tofu, and Yellow Curry with salmon. It took a few minutes for the waitress to come to our table, but after that, service was good. The decor is modest, but they pay attention to detail (I think it shows in their food and drinks). I also had the hot Ginger and Honey Tea because it was a rainy day and I got chilly once inside. It was so warm and smooth, I would love to try it iced on a warm day. All in all, this is a WOULD RECOMMEND restaurant!

Delicious. Our group went at lunch and had great bento boxes.

Excellent food and service. The sushi was wonderful, fresh and very hand done. I had the Tom kha soup. Wonderful. Give it a try
