Tenacious Tea Time. We were bustling along in a fashion appropriate to the chill factor, which was stirring somewhere around zero on this particularly nasty day. But we managed to find the handle to the door and whisk ourselves inside. Beautifully, as soon as we were seated, we were offered a choice of hot tea which we frantically accepted. Aaahhh, that warm water moving through the body, defrosting the wicked whip that had invaded us on the jog from the car. Once again, feeling human, we picked up the menus before us and began deliberations. In the end we agreed that some soup and a couple clusters of sushi rolls would be the way to go. Our soup; The Rock n Roller, has shrimp and veggie tempura and we chose udon noodles to swim in the broth. Because I was sharing, I didnt fire spice it up, but it didnt really need anything; the broth was delicious. As was just about everything we ate, with the exception of the tempeh rolls, which came in our roll combo box. It was more of an oversight on our part, if we had been paying closer attention we wouldve asked to sub them out for something else, as we dont eat creepy things like tempeh. Give me flesh of the beast any and every day of the week, I say. But the other rolls; the California, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna, were all up to snuff. I chop chopped my way through the wakame salad and bean sprouts like they were our last meal and Mrs. McStyles wasnt missing a beat with any of this stuff either. Satisfaction was ours. The place is slightly worn for wear, but in a charming way and personally I prefer that to the shiny and immaculate, like some of the Asian joints up the road are. Its somewhat of a tight fit between tables, and there arent that many of them (ten maybe? twelve?) but because the atmosphere is casual and warm, you dont feel like youre in an assembly hall as you would in other restaurants with a similar layout. Our server was a gem, keeping the few of us braving the elements on this particular Tuesday afternoon entertained and well looked after. All in all; a wonderful experience. Horrible service. I took my family here and the waitresses were rude and inattentive. They also charged 20% gratuity for three adults to eat. They must have been counting the children.
Best Japanese EVER!!!. This is my favorite Japanese restaurant on EARTH! Seriously, go there… you will not regret it! I like the tofu or tempeh spicy garlic myself. Eager to try some new things they’ve added to the menu as well.
Expected better…. Went in yesterday night. First thing is for our group of six, we were crammed into a corner. This location is TINY! Also, never did see where there sanitation score sheet was, even thought it is supposed to be placed in clear view. Anyway, onto the food. Our group mostly got noodle pots, which they said the broth and meat were very good, but everything else was very bland. I ordered a combo with a sushi roll (tempura which came out cold) and also the teriyaki chicken, which was good but the sauce was a little too salty. Mostly, bland is how we all would descirbe this place. And as far as customer service, there really isn’t any. Both servers looked annoyed the whole time, and seemed fairly pretentious about themselves. None of us will be going back there.
Disappointing. Food was okay from my perspective. The wife, who is from Japan, was very disappointed. She was expecting excellent food since she heard the chef was Japan. The sushi was extremely small and miso yaki had a weak taste of miso. On the other hand, my noodle soup was good.
Heiwa Shokudo. Great food. Service is good, ambiance is good. Small restaurant and parking is an issue.
Best sushi in Asheville, great experience. I have to agree with the other positive reviews of Heiwa Shokudo’s- excellent food, well prepared, very nice staff, cozy restaurant. There are a number of really good places to eat in Asheville, and it becomes a bit hard to choose, but somehow I almost always want to end up here to eat. Perhaps the only fault I can find is that the food preparation takes a bit longer than you would expect (plan at least an hour here, maybe longer at peak times) but this really isn’t a fault since it’s obvious the food is being made with care and attention… the time just adds to the quality. Excellent.
