Wonderful, lovingly created and prepared food that is both healthful and delicious. A tiny gem of a restaurant in a warm, down-home Japanese setting, it’s been a consistent favorite over the years.
Went to Heiwa for lunch, and it was very disappointing. The service was extremely slow, which as a server myself I understand, but there was only one other 2 person table! Besides the slowness, the server knew nothing about items on the menu. Food finally comes.. My appetizer came out with the rest of the food. My tempura shrimp was cold, and so chewy I couldn’t eat it. My partner at the same time spits out his chicken- also disgustingly cold, chewy, and lots of veins. He finished his water before the food arrived and never was offered a refill until we got the check (from a different server).Asheville is full of amazing food and servers- do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. Like Ganko or Zen sushi.
Let’s go to Heiwa Shokudo. My wife lived in Japan teaching English years ago and misses authentic Japanese food. She finds this place reminds her of the food she has had in Japan. It is our favorite restaurant in Asheville. Even the miso soup tastes great here. Yes many a day we debate where to go to eat, and when we can’t agree where to go, we say let’s go to Heiwa, we can always agree on that. They certainly know how to cook fish like it should be cooked, the mackerel is great. The servers are always friendly. We believe you cannot go wrong with anything ordered here.
