I have eaten here once before, although, it was after a few beers and it was fine. We ate there last night and yuck! First, only one serving in the entire place. She did fine though. I asked what type of soda they have, the server said they are out of soda??? Ok fine, moving on. I order a dish with tofu and seasonably available vegetables. What I got was frozen vegetables in a brown muck and no tofu. I asked about the tofu and she said the were out. She didn’t say that when I ordered or when she brought me my food. WTF? She did offer to get me paneer which did turn out to be better then the rest of the dish. On the other hand the rice was good and the water was cold, once she added ice. Not going back.

Killer buffet. Don’t order off the menu because it just comes off the buffet. This place is authentic. Just be willing to wait for some things like forks and water. It gets slammed for a little place. Kids and I loved it!!!! I’ll go again and again. It’s so good I dreamed about it.

I had never had Himalayan food before, so I decided to try the lunch buffet. I enjoyed every item they served. Can’t wait to go back again. My daughter will soon be visiting from Boston, and I’m hoping that she will want to go with me.The atmosphere is peaceful and lovely, and the staff was exceptionally welcoming. Next time I will ask to see the menu, just so I can get an idea of all the choices.

Don’t bother ordering off the menu…they just get it off the buffet. That is clearly bad business practice. I liked this place before that. Beware!

Great service…but the black lentil dal was so salty it was inedible. I love dal and I love salt…but this dish was so salty you couldn’t taste the other spices! BUMMER! Thankfully, we also ordered the veggie chau chau and it was good, though.

Little bit of Napal in Asheville. Kathmandu Cafe is one of those places you have to try if you’re a foodie in Asheville. How many places can you find Himalayan food? If you’re wondering what Himalayan food is, think Indian cuisine with slightly different flavor profiles. Our first visit was during lunch so we were able to try the buffet. The only downside to this is that all the dishes with pretty mild to appease everyone… traditionally Himalayan food has a kick, so I was excited to get back for dinner. Overall though, the food on the buffet had great flavor and certainly made us want to come back and order our own spiced up entrees. Once we returned for dinner, we tried the chai. If you love spiced tea, you have to order the Chai here. The smell of the spices alone will make you want to take a trip to Napal, maybe even climb Mt. Everest. Anyways, we also ordered Kukhura Aloo (spicy chicken) and Masu Bhat as our mains. We asked for medium spice and they both arrived spiced to our liking. The sauces here are well developed and have that awesome exoitic spice flavor like you’ll find in Indian cuisine. We ordered naan bread with our dishes to make sure no sauce was left behind. Kathmandu Cafe is an experience, and definitely one I wouldn’t want to miss if I was dining in Asheville. If you want good exotic food and a bit on zen to pair, look no further than Kathmandu Cafe in downtown Asheville.

Reaching New Altitudes. We’d originally planned on going to Mela but quickly cooled on the idea once we discovered the circus behind that particular door, and also; the wait. So we strolled up the road to Kathmandu Cafe, which was also on our wishlist. Though they were also fairly busy, there were still a decent amount of open tables and we were led to one right out of the gate. We then took a look at the buffet (which is a dollar cheaper than Mela’s) and agreed that it looked a bit tired, so we asked for menus to explore. I almost played it lame and went with my ‘fall back’ dish; chicken tikka masala, but then decided to try something different. And that turned out to be murg korma. As is her style, variety trumps all and Mrs. McStyles didnt have to do much soul searching before acknowledging that a Thali was the only way to go. When I told our server my choice she said that they had just added that dish to the buffet, so I again went and checked it out, did the math and decided to go in that direction. Im glad that I did, they had freshened things up a bit since we first arrived and there was a kidney bean curry that wasnt on the regular menu that looked really good. Anyhow, I made a thinly veiled attempt at being a gentleman and wait for my wifes food to arrive before I attacked the buffet. But that failed pretty miserably, pretty quickly, and I soon found myself grabbing a plate and shamelessly dishing myself out some grub. The murg korma was a beautiful thing; large chunks of white meat chicken swimming in a sweet curry made from coconut cream, coriander and raisins, which I spread over some basmati and occasionally scooped up with naan. It was an entirely different beast than the tomato based masala sauces that Im accustomed to. The kidney bean curry turned out to be a champ as well, sporting a nice amount of bite and some hearty richness to it. I actually found a couple blackened chilis in there and made the mistake of grinding them up with my teeth which immediately lit my mouth on fire. But it hurt so good that I just scooped some of that sweet sauce in there and let it slowly smother the heat. The Misses’ food took a rather long time to arrive, but was worth the wait. Each one of her little ramkins held a different delight and she poked and picked her way through each one methodically as I sat there like a true american with my overstuffed gut. In the end it was quite clear that she was wholly impressed with each offering and we both agreed that we would have to make this place a permanent addition to our lives.I also want to add that this is a truly charming restaurant, with beautiful hand sculpted wooden beams that run the length of the dining area decorated with ornate carvings and there was a pleasing amount of visual warmth that seemed to radiate from everywhere at once; its really quite romantic. Our server was as kind and attentive as one could hope for. Overall, a very pleasant experience.Grade; A- (the prices for those lamb dishes on the menu seem a bit steep at twenty plus dollars a plate) drexlermcstyles.tumblr.com
