Stop whatever you are doing and go eat here. The staff was very kind and helpful in accommodating our group of 6 on a busy night, and the food was delicious. The shrimp and grits was among the best I’ve ever had, the meatloaf is homey, and the crab bisque is quite good. The beignets were not quite NOLA standard, but they were still very good. Others in our party had a crab burger, shrimp creole pasta, jambalaya, and another burger, and not one plate had any food left on it. The chocolate cake dessert is a massive slice, and the banana pudding is very good. The only disappointment was a blackberry thyme old fashioned, which was made with a low end bourbon and watered down (being from Ky, we have high bourbon standards). However, our awesome waiter saw the drink was not enjoyed and brought a complimentary Mayfelade (I think that’s what he called it), which was a bright, very tasty lemonade drink. I wish we were in town longer to try more meals here!

The atmosphere here is laid back and bordering on tacky, in that charming Asheville way. The interior is filled with tiny chandeliers and welded sculptures. They do have patio seating. The food was OK but the service was fantastic. Our server was friendly, funny, and attentive without being too present. My daughter had the fried green tomato BLT with a side of parmesan grits. I snuck a bite and actually wish I had ordered that. I had one of their dinner specials, scallops and mussels over linguine. The scallops were cooked very well but the mussels were slightly over done. The dish overall lacked seasoning. I might stop by to try lunch, but for dinner I think there are better offerings in town. Nothing negative to say really, just an average meal.

Lunch at a table in the inside courtyard was perfect even on a warm day. Loved the local beer, fried green tomato BLT and fried okra. Even the homemade pickles were delicious.

My wife and I have walked past Mayfel’s to go to the restaurant next door, we won’t be doing that anymore. Mayfel’s seems to be very laid back, my only complaint is that the service was slow. We started with the fried oyster appetizer and although very good we should have known better since we are FTP Florida as the freshness just does not compare. We also had the fried green tomatoes. A classic southern dish, it was perfect. The goat cheese garnish was creamy an accented the dish perfectly, only suggestion would be not to be stingy with the roulade sauce, but that is just an opinion. For out entree we had the Bourbon Glazed Pork chop and try as I may I can’t find a criticism. It was prepared perfectly, and the cherry bourbon demi glaze was a perfect paring. Do yourself a favor and stop at Mayfel’s.

It’s Father’s day and every where in downtown is packed (and I beat the rush, or so I thought). But Mayfel’s had a short wait and was well worth it. My fianc had the chicken biscuit with green onions. I had to steal half of it. And I got the brioche french toast with blackberry compote. Absolutely fantastic. This is our new brunch spot, hands down.

Cheddar Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. Delicious and cooked as requested. Potato bun topped it with the sweet pickles.

This is the second time I’ve been here. I think there are some things that they do incredibly well, like their biscuits, but if they would just use fresh potatoes instead of frozen for their home fries that would notch it up 10 points in my opinion. They use very fresh ingredients, they just fall short on some things. I don’t think I’ll go back here for brunch. I think there are other options in Asheville that would be much more delicious.
