Some of the price points are a just a tad high for the portions and there are trace elements of aloofness from the staff, but this is real deal-level sushi. I was in Singapore a few months ago and some of the items reminded me of the level of quality I experienced over there. Aforementioned comment about the staff in general aside, my server actually was very warm and considerate.

Zen and Their Art. If you follow my reviews then you know I generally dont think much of the Asian dining options we have here in Asheville. Our Thai, and especially; our Chinese restaurants, leave much to be desired. However, for whatever reason, Japanese is a whole different ball game. There are several quality options out there and Zen Sushi turns out to be one of them. The setting inside is not what I was expecting from the street. That is to say; it is much more charming than the strip mall exterior. There was a decent sized crowd for lunch but we were seated quickly and service was never an issue. I was craving some Udon soup, but at $13 I quickly pulled the plug on that idea. Instead I plain janed it with a chicken teriyaki box while the ol’ ball & chain ventured a two roll special, choosing the shrimp tempura and bagel ones. The miso soup came and went, as it usually does. Nothing groundbreaking there. It took a while, and then my box touched down. The gal explained that my wifes would be right up. Almost ten minutes later, it came. We werent too happy on that front, but they could almost be forgiven, as the layout of her plate was beautiful. Easily the most striking presentation we had seen in town. My box though, was a bit of a mixed bag. Most places grill the chicken breast and then present the fillet sliced. I like it like that. Visually its appealing and its the best way to ensure the meat is juicy. What I got here were generous chunks of breast that seem to have been parcooked and then thrown on the grill for a reheat before being tossed in the teriyaki. They were all pretty dried out, which is a shame because the sauce was lovely and I really enjoyed the sliced onion / bean sprout bed they rested in. As for the sushi, it was as superb on the taste buds as it was on the eyes. The medley of flavors in each of them stood tall and the construction was solid. Everyone rants and raves about Wasabi, but I thought the ones here were better. At least good enough for us to make plans for a return visit to get at a couple of their specialty ones. We’ll go from there.Grade: B (that time differential and the chicken put a damper on a otherwise fine meal.) drexlermcstyles.tumblr.com

Sushi was okay but not worth the price. Noodle stirfry was bland. Service was good. Probably won’t be going back.

Zen Sushi. Good susi, made fresh. It is close to us, and the prices are reasonable. I would recommend for lunch. Casual, not fancy. The service is always very nice, and willing to explain certain dishes.

Strip Mall Sushi?. Zen sushi is located in an ugly small strip mall constructed on Merrimon Avenue in place of something better. Honestly, I didn’t expect much and was quite pleasantly surprised. The sushi is fresh, they have a great variety, and interesting daily specials. Sit outside if you can – the view of the trees in the residential area to the east is quite nice. The prices are reasonable and the service is good.
