Some Like It Hot. WOW! This tiny place serves up some of the hottest Chinese dishes we’ve ever encountered. The only place that comes close is 35 Restaurant, located then in Cary. They are in a rather large shopping center at the corner of Church St. and Huffman Mill Rd. They have a small amount of seating, but seems to be mainly a take out restaurant. We ordered two lunch specials – Mongolian Beef (an old favorite) and Hot & Spicy Chicken (a new dish, to us at least). The Beef was $6.25, the Chicken came in at $5.95 – both with Pork Fried Rice. The Mongolian Beef was far from the classic version, which is composed of sliced beef (often flank steak), sliced green onions, and a sauce with some heat. The dish here had a variety of vegetables, including very coarsely chopped green pepper, onions, baby corn (awful stuff), and a little carrot, along with the thinly sliced beef. Too many Chinese restaurants use the over-abundance of vegetables in far too many dishes – filler I guess. The sauce was thicker than that I’ve normally seen, or than that I prepare myself, and there was a great deal of it, and it was extremely hot. The beef was served along with the pork fried rice in a plastic bowl, allowing the sauce to pool at the bottom, and soaking a good portion of the rice – not a plating technique I care for. I’m not phobic about having items on my plate touch, but I don’t particularly want everything to combine almost like a stew either. The chicken dish was basically the same – thin slices of chicken (prehaps pounded flat), in the same sauce, in the same amount, along with same vegetables, all served together with the rice in a plastic bowl. The overall effect and taste was the same, as well. We like hot dishes, but these two were a little over the topThe Pork Fried Rice was awesome, as good as any we’ve tried. The grains were perfectly separated, the texture and flavor were excellent, and there was plenty of pork. We’ll probably try some other things here – wings, egg roll, egg foo young, lo mein, etc. This is not the place to get authentic dishes, but there is some potential for good Amercanized dishes, which have their own appeal, at least to us, from time to time.
This is the best chinese restaurant in the entire city hands down! Hong kong is a very authentic spot with a great spread of both traditional and popular dishes served quickly and at very reasonable prices. The fried rice is the best I’ve ever had, and any of their wonderful dishes compliment it very well. This is a must try for all chinese food lovers!
