Still in Decline. Growing up in the South, one of my favorite experiences as a child was going to Shoney’s in Asheville with my parents and my sisters. Food was always good, service was excellent and I’m going to date myself, they even had curb service.Later in years, they were also a good place to stop for their breakfast buffet when traveling.I’m not sure what happened but over the years the quality or food and service has continued to go downhill. The best one in the Charlotte area was the one in Cornelius but it closed 15 years ago and became a motorcycle dealership. The others have continued their downward spiral and more and more close over time as patrons get fed up with the poor food and service. This one is no exception and of the few remaining, is in the running for worst of the lot. Up until today, the last time I was in this Shoney’s was probably about 2 or 3 years ago and it was nothing to write home about then. Today was even less so.Place is dingy and while I won’t go so far as to say it was dirty, it could use some work. Service is non-existent. Forget the buffet. The food that is there has obviously been there for some time and food on a steam table, unless the food turns quickly, rapidly become dry and overcooked. Ordered a fish sandwich off of the menu and it was no better. At least the fries were decent.Unless something changes shortly, I fear that this restaurant will go the way of the others in the Charlotte market. That said, I think the whole chain is in trouble and unless something changes shortly, we will no longer see Shoney’s in the Southern Markets. Used to be good but not sure they can come back.
