The Burgh Comes to Concord. My wife is from Pittsburgh and while she does not miss the winters, is a Steelers fan through and through. I lived in Pittsburgh or more correctly Latrobe/Greensburg for a number or years which is where we met but at the same time, not as avid or should I say rabid as fan as she is.Took here and her sister here for brunch after Church the other week. I had heard that this place was popular with Steelers fans but was unprepared for the extent when I walked in the front door. The place is decorated in black and gold with Steeler’s memoribilia everywhere. The only exceptions was one University of Pittsburgh penant and a number of items from NASCAR which considering it’s only about 2 miles north of Charlotte Motor Speedway makes sense. So much for the Steelers hype. For starters, my wife and her sister both started with homemade wedding soup and I had Italian Sausage stuffed Banana Peppers. As an appetizer to share, we also had stuffed mushrooms. This was the only disappointment because the mushrooms dripping with oil which overpowered the rest of the dish.I ordered the homemade Lasagna while my wife and her Sister both ordered Veal Parmesan. Both came with pasta sides and of course, plenty of garlic knots.Everything was excellent and the portions were hugh. We ended up taking the excess home and enjoying it again later in the week. Everything about the place reminded me of some of my favorite restaurants when I lived in Pittsburgh and then I found out why and the mystery was solved. When I first moved to the Pittsburgh area when I was with PPG, everyone told us about two very popular Italian Restaurants that were in Crabtree which is a crossroads in the middle of nowhere north of Greensburg on Hwy 119. The two restaurants were Rizzo’s Malabar Inn and Carbone’s and they attracted patrons from all over Western PA and were in themselves, a destination for generations of patrons from PA, Western Maryland, NE Ohio, parts of West Virginia etc.Talking to the manager, I found out that the owner who was the Steeler Nut and I use the term lovingly, was from Crabtree and had worked for Rizzo’s for 15 years prior to relocating to Concord. Not sure if he was part of the family or not but the bottom line is the same. He managed to recreate the Rizzo’s dining experience here in the Concord area. One of the hallmarks of Rizzo’s was the great personal service and it is the same here. Service was outstanding. While I normally just say that I would or would not recommend a restaurant, if you like Italian or if you are a Pittsburgh fan, then this is your kind of place. Strongly recommend.
Took my family to this place on a stop over on a trip. We got the wedding soup salads pizza stuffed shells and meatballs. The food was VERY good. The owner Diane was very sweet and made dessert special for my 13 year old daughters birthday. The owners were originally from Pittsburgh as we are and they made us feel at home here. Highly recommend this place.
