Long time favorite due for a little touch up. My family and I have eaten barbecue her for more than 30 years. Overall the food is good. The service is friendly. A lot of regulars. The ownership has gone through changes and has resulted in broadening the menu to include everything from plate specials with country style steak to spaghetti to fish. They’ve lost some of their identity as a THE place for barbecue. The sauce and slaw are great, but the meat doesn’t has the flavor it used to. One factor was imposed by the local government that required them to no longer use wood, but switch to gas fired cooking. This is the original location and needs some cleaning up. The restaurant is looking dingy and cluttered. Great tradition. Great opportunity to improve.
Jury is Still Out. This is one of those reviews that is hard to write. I’ve been going to Troutman’s at one location or another for probably close to 10 years. During that time, 2 or the 3 have closed leaving only the original DT Concord location. I’m guessing the ownership is getting older and no interest from anyone in the family taking over so things are just sliding. If so, too bad, several of the closed restaurants were great and the concept is still valid although it needs to be updated.Enough for that. Food is still good although it is sliding over time. Service is fantastic and most of the employees have been there forever. Decor is a bit dated and needs makeover.I know I started out negative but that is the way it is. I still have a very positive view on the restaurant but it’s beginning to slide a bit. For the time being, it’s a defiinately good and I would recommend to anyone.
Don’t bother. The barbecue was bland and fatty. It was probably the poorest quality BBQ I’ve had in a restaurant. The service was okay; the waitress checked in often and brought drink refills. But we won’t be going back.
Bland Barbecue, Inconsistent Service, But There Is Some Good Here. This joint is worn, and a little tattered, and not just around the edges – the kind of place that aspires to one day, with some fixing up, be a dive, and this is the place they moved into – don’t even ask about the old one. This restaurant has been around and stays busy, but frankly, the barbecue is not what it once was, and the service has suffered as well in the larger building. The chopped barbecue is sort of a hybrid, more Eastern than Lexington, but not quite either. The chop is moderate, and it comes sauced from the kitchen, tender, moist, but no smokiness. The net result is a bland product that often arrives luke warm. I’d pass on the barbecue, there is better in Concord. Now the breakfast here is very good, and portions ample. They have the usual breakfast menu items, with a twist or two, like liver pudding, which I happen to like, once in a while. And some of the country cooking items, especially the CS Steak, are excellent. And the hot dog here is especially good – nice chili, soft bun, red wiener. The service here is inconsistent, and can be cranky – pretty good one time, in the toliet the next, and this can be true whether it is a peak time or not. Old girls, they do get weary.
