Don’t go for the pizza. I’ve been living in Durham for almost 4 years. I have 3 children under 4 years old. I’ve heard multiple people suggest meeting at Tomato Jakes for dinner. After years of never eating there I gave it a try last year. I was speechless. It had to be the worst pizza I’ve ever experienced. It brought me back to school lunch pizza — cold, hard cheese, bland crust. A Groupon came out giving me another opportunity to try this place. I mean, how could it still be around and have such terrible pizza? I used the Groupom this past weekend – ordering again a plain cheese pizza, a margerhita pizza, a pepperoni kids pizza and a kids cheese pizza. Again, the cheese was hard (I don’t know what they do that leaves a thick, hard layer of cheese on the pizza), the crust was barely cooked enough (it was pale, lacked crunch or chewiness), and it was flavorless. The margerhita pizza was a plain cheese pizza without sauce sprinkled with a few diced tomatoes and basil. It was a poor excuse for a pizza. The kid’s pizza’s were just like old school lunch pizzas – square, flat crust that lacked any flavor. Why can’t they serve kids normal pizza? My kids were confused that it even was pizza. The atmosphere is perfect for an outing with kids. Lots of tables, booths, windows. A self-serve soda machine. The staff was friendly. It was clean. But overall nothing can make up for the poor quality food. I think they must survive off of unsuspecting out of town guests that order from their hotel room around the corner.

Pretty sure you have to have at least 3 children under the age of 10 to eat here. I had cheese pizza and it was terrible. How can you mess up CHEESE?!
