The BBQ Is Just One Of The Nice Choices Here. This relative newbie on the Eastern NC BBQ scene occupies the second, and final, home of the late, lamented Melton’s Barbecue – a true, iconic NC barbecue restaurant. This place represents a totally different approach to that embraced by Melton’s – this is cafeteria style, with chopped pork barbecue only a small part of what is offered – there are baby back ribs, brisket, and down home country cooking items – including Pork Chops (Smothered or Fried), Meatloaf, Fried Chicken, Chicken & Pastry, BBQ Chicken, and Fried Fish (Trout & Flounder). They have the usual sides, daily specials, a few sandwiches, and serve chopped barbecue and beef brisket every day. Prices are very reasonable – 1 Meat & 2 Sides (with roll or hushpuppies) are $6.99 at lunch and dinner, and you can add an extra meat for only a $1 more. A Veggie Plate with 3 items is $3.99, roll or hushpuppies included – that probably beats K & W.The chopped barbecue is very nice – moist, tender, moderately chopped, and has a nice vinegar hook at the end, but little heat. They cook only pork shoulders here so the meat is lean and clean. The Beef Brisket is tender, but very heavily sauced with a thick, red sauce that is pretty sweet – a little goes a long ways. I would not reorder this unless I could get it without the sauce. The Chicken & Pastry was outstanding, loaded with chicken flavor, and the pastry is thin and delicious – comes close to that at Bum’s in Ayden.Collards were very good, well seasoned; the Mac & Cheese was also nice; the Butter Beans were canned but also benefited from being seasoned correctly; and the Cabbage was ok, had some red pepper flakes, but they seemed to contribute very little. The Slaw was decent, but very wet, while the Hushpuppies were exceptional. This is Top 20 Eastern style barbecue here, if a little on the mild side, but some will like this. The pricing is more than reasonable, some you will find value as well as variety, and the service is nice – folks are friendly and helpful.Make Note: They are CLOSED ON SATURDAY.

I’ll pass. As a local, after hearing so much about this place I had to try it out. I was sort of put out when I walked in & found a cafeteria line & the ambiance was nil. I to get a rib dinner to go. For sides I chose cole slaw & the mac’n’cheese. The ribs were okay if you like them so tender there’s not much chew to them, but everything…the sauce, the slaw AND the mac’n’cheese tasted like it all had a pound of sugar dumped it. There won’t be any return visits for me.

Incredible Fried Chicken!. Wonderful Southern cooking. Fried chicken is worth the drive. This is where the locals go. Very friendly service. Great price and value.
