Hidden gem. Stop in for their plate lunch, and enjoy. Just had Salisbury steak which was awesome, not to mention some of the best homemade mashed potatoes you will ever have, topped off with stewed squash and a sweet tea. Needless to say you will be full and happy.
Nice Hot Dog & Burger Joint. Definitely one of those little mom & pop neighborohood grills you gotta be looking for to find, tucked away off Silas Creek, at the corner of Broad & Acadia. The restaurant is small, 8 or 10 tables, a little on the worn side, but bright and clean. There is a small amount of parking on the left side of the building (Broad Street side). There are old pictures of different Winston locations on the walls – kind of cool. The folks are friendly (they welcome you when you come in, and thank you for your business when you leave), the service is quick. They serve breakfast (usual suspects on the menu) until 10:30AM, will offer several daily specials (today was Meatloaf & sides for $6.50 or so), and 8 or 10 plate selections from the menu – CS Steak, Pork Chops, Hamburger Steak, Flounder, & Shrimp.. The menu also includes several sandwich selections, including homemade Chicken, Tuna, Egg Salad, as well as Pimento Cheese. But we came for the Hot Dog ($2.10) and Cheeseburger ($3.25), and that was our order – filled quickly, and we were on our way. The hot dog was very good, just short of being great – the weiner is good, the bun is nicely toasted, and the chili is solid if not spectacular – but there is an underlying bit of sweetness that throws the true Southern chili dog taste off. Strangely enough that bit of sweetness seems based in the mustard used, not the chili. The Cheeseburger was quite nice – well sized for the price, and with good flavor. Next time in, I’ll take a shot and some of their homemade salads – on a sandwich, of course.
