The most terrible BBQ I have ever had it tasted of straight vinegar. No smoke. You couldn’t even taste the pork I would never eat from there again. They obviously don’t know what they are doing.
Sunday night, not busy at all. Food was good and service was very friendly.
Good Food – Good Folk. Yes Virginia, there is BBQ in North Carolina. Sooner or later, this transient had to hit NC BBQ and it started well with Wilber’s. From all appearances, it resembles the well established Mom & Pop operation (50 years in 2012) that is the community standard. Checkered red & white table cloths covering 6 ft tables with hard back chairs is your decor. Seating is on your own and the wait staff makes their way to the tables rather quickly with sweet tea and hush puppies (also nice and sweet). I got the pork platter piled high with Eastern Carolina vinegar chop, slaw, and potato salad. Moist, nice kick, and very flavorful. My better half got the fried chicken which also was moist throughout with golden crisp skin. Wilber’s hit the right mark and we will certainly be back. Recommended.
One Of The 100 Mile Barbecue Joints. One of the very best, old school Eastern NC BBQ joints – sauced with a nice vinegar based dip. The plates provide a nice portion of moist, tasty barbecue, with decent slaw. The potato salad is not my favorite; the hush puppies are good. The BBQ Chicken is simply strange. It is grilled or roasted chicken with a strange looking and tasting sauced – is is not even like the tomato based sauce some places put on their chicken. This is one place where the Western NC BBQ joints have the edge over Eastern ones – Clark’s in Kernersville, Whitley’s and Jimmy’s in Lexington, and TarHeel Q near Mocksville. But, I digress. Wilber’s is good -very, very good Eastern NC BBQ, and I always buy some to take home, along with their sauce. And yes, I would travel 100 miles to eat this BBQ, and have do so a number of times.
Could just be the best eastern style BBQ in the state… No lie.
I gotta say it’s been a while since I’ve been here. Wilbur’s is featured in a lot of food magazines I read, and I just don’t get it. The best BBQ in the area is certainly BJ’s in laGrange if you’re looking for Eastern NC style Q.
Best BBQ in NC!. I grew up on this place, and although I live far away, whenever I am in the area I always make it a point to stop in. I will go miles out of my way for their food!
