The service is great, the food is just alright, though. In terms of pizza joints, probably not the best in town, but I would go ahead and say they arent known for their pizza per say. Give them a shot, though. They seem to have very affordable lunch specials.
Low Key But Delicious Kabobs. Ali Baba was re-opened about a month and a half ago. It is in the same location it was many years ago. The owner owns both it and the Golden Pizza location that is attached to Ali Baba. It had closed well before I had moved to Greensboro so I’ve never tried the original restaurant but have had people tell me it was good. Unfortunately, the real money for the business was coming from the Golden Pizza side so the whole location was converted to it.I went for a quick lunch. The place has something of a deli feel to it with glass, refrigerated display cases. The menu is fairly simple with a focus on kabobs but with couple of unique twists. For one thing, you can create your own sampler platter of 4 items choosing between items such as tabouleh, dolmas, hummus, baba ghanouj, salad, veggies, rice and moujadara. You can also buy many of these items by the pound. The gentleman at the counter was friendly and helpful and genuinely interested in my experience.I went with the chicken kabobs after much deliberation. Other kabob choices include keftah, beef and shrimp. You have a 1 skewer ($5.99) or 2 skewer ($6.99) option and come with two sides (from those listed above). Extra skewers are $2.99 each. I chose the hummus and baba ghanouj. The skewers are fresh and cooked over charcoal while you wait and my chicken skewers were awesome! Hot, juicy and flavorful – they were the best skewers I’ve had in a long time. Both the hummus and the baba ghanouj were tasty (and i’m not the biggest eggplant fan, either) and prepared authentically with plenty of lemon citrus and olive oil and thin, crispy pita bread. Green and calamata olives were also included as well as a saffron-like rice bed. It was more food than I could eat so worth the $7 price point. I’m ready for round two of those skewers. They also carry a decent selection of unique, eastern european/mediterranean regional beverages and I was very happy to see Radenska on the shelf. Radenska is a Slovenian natural mineral water with a mildly sodium/metallic taste. It’s probably not for everyone (esp at $1.79 for a .25L bottle) but it took me back to my college years. In terms of a full range of food options, Ali Baba is not your typical mediterranean restaurant but their focused choices are really, really good. If you are looking for informal, mom-and-pop style mediterranean, you should visit these guys.Food: 8/10; Service 8/10; Value: 7/10; Atmosphere: 5/10 (very low key)
