Off The Chain Soul Food. Boss Hogs BBQ has been around for 25 years and the Turner family knows BBQ. They smoke there BBQ, Ribs & Chicken in house with flavored wood chips. The mac-n-cheese is to die for . . ummmm! So if you are looking for some real soul food, check out Boss Hogs! Mac, Blackeye Peas, Collards, Potato Salad, Frest Cabbage, Green Bean, Baked Beans, Homemade Hush Puppies and Drup Turner’s (Bill Son) Famous Sweet Potato Pie, Mrs. Lilly’s Gourmet Ice Tea. Just loosen up your belt and rest in one of the booths and watch some TV.
OK BBQ. This plainly decorated little place has been opened for a few years now. It is located in a shabby little strip center in a part of the Bessemer area that screams for some kind of renewal, and has for some time. I would probably stick with a lunch visit if you wish to try their barbecue. This is a order at the counter and wait for the call kind of place. The folks here are nice and friendly, but the service can be a little slow, even if they are not busy – I called in my last order just to avoid this delay, but still had to wait nearly 15 minutes after I arrived, total of 35 minutes for a chopped sandwich and a hot dog.The pork here is strickly middle of the road, with no hint of smoke and a relatively mild sauce. The slaw is ok, but a little sweet for my taste. They serve a nice portion here for the price, so there is value. The dog is good if you go with the traditional chili dog toppings – avoid their creation which includes both ketchup and mustard, and with slaw. These are nice folks, and the food is ok, not great. You may want to give it a shot, if the opportunity arises, but this is not a destination barbecue joint.18 Jun, 2011Just OK. This plainly decorated little place has been opened for a few years now.
