Patio. Oh my a soft summer night sit on the Patio.
One of Two Favorite Mexican Restaurants. My girlfriend and I went for lunch. It was hitting 90 degrees so we bailed on the patio and dined inside. Casa Vallarta is a sister restaurant to San Luis on Lee Street, however, this location focuses more on the Tex-Mex style rather than a true Mexican style. The decor is pleasant but typical Mexican restaurant decor. There sanitation rating is an impressive 101, however. The menu is extensive but also very similar to other competitors in this category. They have specials, both food and drink, everyday of the week as far as I can tell. My girlfriend had the Vallarta Fundido and I had the Chile Verde. Being a native New Mexican, I’m always leery about eating Mexican food in NC but I was pleasantly surprised by the Chile Verde. Traditionally, this meal uses tough cuts of pork and stews them slowly allowing the acids in the green chiles and the heat to tenderize the meat. I found this dish to be very tender and flavorful. While not spicy hot, there was still good flavoring though perhaps a touch heavy on the sodium. The pork pieces were cut smaller than you’d see in NM and this probably helps contributes to the tenderness. It was served piping hot with tortillas too hot to handle for a minute or two and a tasty guacamole garnish. My girlfriend said the Vallarta Fundido was very good also but mentioned that the shrimp was a little chewy due to overcooking. Both meals were served with spanish rice and refried beans – both of which were very typical of what you’d get at most Mexican restaurants (the art of truly delicious spanish rice hasn’t made it this far east yet, unfortunately).Mon – Thurs Casa Vallarta offers 12 oz Dos XX drafts for just .99 cents and bottled Negro Modelo for $1.99 — ridiculously cheap. So, I had to have a Dos XX amber 🙂 Our server was friendly and adequately attentive; we had no complaints there. The food was served quickly, as well.Prices are reasonable with the lunch Chile Verde priced at $5.99 and the Fundido at $7.99. We had a $5 off lunch coupon with the purchase of two lunches so our bill came to a whopping 12 bucks…not shabby.Overall, this was a very good lunch of better than average Mexican food and a very cheap price.Food: 8/10; Service: 7/10; Value (with coupon) 10/10; Atmosphere: 7/10
