I don’t think FredB and I ate at the same restaurant!I just dropped $10+ on a raw (and exceptionally tough) piece of steak, not a steak, a PIECE of steak. My sides were cabbage, which was tasteless and palid, and what I can only imagine was canned beets. The coffee was awful. The floor was sticky, the table was less sticky, but sticky nonetheless. The decor is hideous.I guess I can see why someone would romanticize the place, pictures of the Mayberry crew, and reviews of the restaurant that are framed on the walls, the very friendly and hard working staff, the memories of maybe what it used to be, but in reality it’s your typical hole in the wall that people go to, because that’s what they’ve always done!
Tribute to the Owner and Staff first…. I am not a veteran reviewer but I have read all the reviews and I want to capitalize on the statement made by Carolina Trekkers, Greensboro; Sixteen years ago this restaurant was acquired by a lady who wants to be sure her customers have a good meal for a fair price. And I would like to take that statement to the next level of what she has provided to the community in the form of generosity, humanity, and kinship by persevering merely by *not* changing the tradition of Coliseum Country Caf. I saw words used to describe the spot as, gem, jewel, and cult following. I am reminded of the movie, Its a Wonderful Life where without the life of George Bailey and what he brought in the way of his savings and loan business to the people of Bedford Falls that those lives would have been altered and possibly displaced. She has given unselfishly to the business of making people happy through the meals and dishes she and her staff create to deliver an experience that I can see by the number of recent reviews is having a lasting effect. There are lots of special places in the world and this is one of them for sure. Not only is there great food which just about all the reviews show are raving about Fish Friday, but this mix of happy eaters have a place behind the curtain of mainstream food haunts to go to for the familiar.I had one meal so far on Fish Friday. The flounder filet was big and flakey and grilled using a brush of butter with just the right amount of smoke. The collard greens were steamed with a bacon flavor which I really liked and the jalapeno cornbread pancake was light using fine-milled cornmeal and just the right amount of hot from the jalapeno. But I want to point out the clam chowder. It was chock-full of clams, bite-sized red potatoes in a broth, not thickened, with some mild herbs.I saw many review comments about not healthy food in general and I will refrain from disagreeing but if one is conscientious of eating healthy then the choices on the menu I see lend themselves to less fat and carbohydrates. So pick those instead of the chicken-fried steak and country gravy! I plan on trying the salmon cakes and salads next.
Excellent Country Cooking Choices Here. As a board certified Foodie, I am often reading restaurant reviews, scanning newspaper articles, visiting websites and blogs, and exchanging e-mails and messages with other foodies – looking for the new places, the new dishes, the emerging cuisines, and the leading food trends. The downside of spending so much time and effort finding the new is that you often neglect the absolute gems that started you down the path to appreciating great food, whatever the style, no matter how humble. This cafe is one of those gems – one that has been around for quite a while, had some ups & downs & some changes, but currently serves up country cooking favorites that are as good as any you’ll find in Greensboro. And that food is served up by some of the friendliest, most engaging restaurant folk you’ll encounter. This place is not much to look at, but if you come here to look, you’re already off task. They offer 4 Daily Special choices (generally priced at $8.29 including beverage) and they cover all the country cooking favorites: Chicken or Turkey Pot Pie, Chopped Sirloin, Fried Chicken, Pork Chops, CS Steak, Spaghetti, Fried Fish, Meat Loaf, Salmon Cakes, Roast Turkey, and even Chicken Fried Steak with authentic White Gravy, and More. Remember Friday is Fish Day!The sides also cover the country cooking spectrum, though in my opinion the sides don’t rise to the same level as the entrees in most cases, and this seem to me to be due to seasoning, rather than a quality problem – a few healthy grinds of salt and pepper makes a huge difference. And the Fried Corn Bread is a must.We had the Chicken Fried Steak with White Gravy, Mashed Potatoes (they’re real), and Collards & the Roast Turkey with Dressing, Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce, Fried Okra, & Field Peas. The Chicken Fried Steak is awesome – nice quality meat, well battered, well seasoned, nicely cooked, and then SMOTHERED in some of the very best White Gravy you’ll find outside of Tejas! The Roast Turkey is cooked in house using top quality, whole turkey breast – no pressed meat here! The gravy is very nice (& not that strange YELLOW colored stuff you often run into), and the dressing is also prepared in house – you can taste the fresh celery & onion – excellent! Other than the real mashed potatoes, the sides were simply average, though the corn bread rocks! And the Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce (they used the canned Ocean Spray) is great. They serve breakfast, offer the usual variety of diner sandwiches (burger is good, pass on the hot dog, try the Fried Bologna), a couple of soup choices (Bean & Bacon is excellent), and a few menu entree regulars (Chicken Tenders, etc). But this place is about traditional country cooking favorites – and they color outside the lines when it comes to diet and health concerns – and if you chose to come here, you should too. And bring cash, no credit cards taken here.20 Jun, 2012Solid Meat & 2 Cafe, Little Ambiance. There is more here than meets the eye, and of course, there would have to be. Located in a beaten up strip center, lost somewhere behind the Greensboro Coliseum, the place is tired and worn, with a funky clutter of retro posters on the walls that gives it that certain charm only a local greasy spoon can claim, and then only have a certain longevity is arrived at..The fried cornbread alone is enough to bring me here on occasion, even though it is all the way across town from both my home and office. My mother made the best fried cornbread I’ve ever tasted, and I realize that some of that view may be due to the nature of childhood memories. She used a little bacon grease in the batter, and they very well may do the same. Great stuff here, even ordered a side once when I was having a sandwich. The have daily specials, and the Flounder on Fridays is always nice, but frankly there is better fried fish around, though maybe not so much in Greensboro. Veggies are nice, well seasoned, even if some are canned. Macroni Salad and the Cole Slaw are way too sweet for my tastes. Hawaiian Chicken is probably best enjoyed in the islands. This is one of the few places where I order the Meatloaf – most places it is a mass of mystery meat covered with a mess of tomato sauce of some discription. Here it is nice, good texture, nice taste. Fried Chicken is decent here, if a little on the greasy side. 3 pieces, 2 sides, bread (get the Fried Cornbread, skip the roll), and a drink for $7.99 is a good deal. Spaghetti sauce is thick, meaty, but a tad sweet.Desserts look good, haven’t tried them – not much on sweets at lunch, only time I eat here. – but folks sure scarf them up. Hot dogs are not my kind – all beef weiner, toasted bun, but weak, sweet chili for $2.29. They serve 3 meals a day here, all are well attended, especially breakfast & lunch. Service is excellent, friendly and attentive. Prices are reasonable. Suits here, blue collar, no collars – no lemon slice in your water, but constant refills on your drink – formica tables. Bring cash, and a healthy appetite. Life is good, a little funky and fattening.
