This has become an almost weekly visit for our family. Nice atmosphere, reasonably priced. This small, cozy place has friendly owners and excellent food. We always get the hot stone bowls and have tried the salmon, beef, chicken and shrimp. My favorite is the shrimp but beware – it is HOT (with heat, not spice)! They always bring a small container of ice cream at the end of the meal. Recommend highly. One of Greensboro’s best kept secrets!
Totally Unique in the Triad. Don Ishiyaki is a completely different experience from any other restaurant in the Triad. My wife loves the korean hot pots, especially the one with the kim chi. I think the food is good, if a bit bland. They have some really unique asian beer I have never seen before, which was quite good. Although very small, the atmosphere is nice, and the owners are nice. While not somewhere I would go frequently, Don Ishiyaki hits the spot if you are in the mood for something out of the ordinary.
Awesome Place. Love this place. The owners are very friendly and the super heated stone rice bowls are great on a cold fall/winter day.
Nice Change Of Pace. Ool little place, with some interesting food choices, all at reasonable prices, a nice, quite atmosphere, with efficient service – and you get ice cream, watermelon, and a cookie at the end, even if you didn’t clean your bowl. The menu is really fairly small – there are rice bowls (hot stone bowls or dish), noodle bowl choices (ramen, udon, or yakisoba noodles) several soups, and a few appetizers, a few side items, and a couple of dessert choices. Some Japanese beers, sake, and a few non-Japanese wines are also on the menu. The rice bowls come with a some meat choices (shrimp, beef, pork, chicken, BBQ eel) and some veggie choices (tofu, bean sprouts, chives, onions, mushrooms, carrot, & zucchini).Noodles are noodles, and the ones here are good, not grea, though almost all the meat items you can choose from are well done. The best here are the rice bowls, especially the Ishiyaki choices served in very hot stone bowls. This comes to the table without sauce, you add that yourself from among regular soy, house white (a sweet sauce), or house red (a chili based sauce with some heat). Everything comes piled atop the hot rice, which continues to cook and develops a great crunch to it. You should stir it all up, add some sauce, and hold the various items against the side of the bowl to cook, or finish cooking – kinda like getting to play with your food while you eat it. Everything is very hot, so care is required in the cooking and the eating. We chose the Hibachi Shrimp Don ($9.65) with white rice, zucchini, bean sprouts, and sauteed onions, along with tiger shrimp (probably 7 or 8). This is an excellent dish, and you can add extra quantities of meat or veggies – the veggies are great on the regular order, but are a little sparse. We also tried the Chicken Katsu Don ($9.45) which is a fried chicken cutlet (very nice taste) with egg, and onion simmered in a dashi sauce, all over rice (white or brown). Dashi sauce is made from dried bonita flakes – the one served here is rather sweet, so a little of this dish goes along ways – nice dish if you’re sharing, a little cloying if the dish is all yours. We were served a complimentary dish of ice cream, a small slice of watermelon, and a cookie – very nice combination of flavors and textures – nice end to a very enjoyable meal.
Tiny portions, which was OK because the food was very bland; overpriced for the area. Restaurant packed with pretentious hipsters trying to appear sophisticated, which probably explains the glowing, overrated reviews. I will not return.
This was one of the five best dining experiences of my life. Beautiful if small restaurant, phenomenal entrees (my girlfriend and I both had ishiyaki; she had spicy tuna and i had bolgogi don), great vegetarian gyoza apps, and i don’t know if this was a mistake or what, but we got free icecream, cookies and edamame. Just a terrific experience all around.
Wow! We had out first dinner there and loved it. When we first came in we got our drinks and they brought hot edamomi to snack on. We ordered Gyoza, which very much like the ones we had in Japan. I had Bibimbop hot stone bowl, rice in a sizzling pot with beef, bean sprouts, kimchee and raw egg on top. You mix this all together and add sauce if you want. So good! My husband had beef yakisoba, noodles with veg and beef. He liked it very much. We must go back to try other things.
