I would rate Rio Grande a C- or a D+. I was always curious about this place because every time I drove by, their parking lot was always full – I assumed it was because the food was great. Unfortunately, the real reason the parking lot is always full is because of it’s proximity to the manufacturing facilities near PTI – I would say at least 50% of the diners had on HondaJet or similar uniforms and appeared to be eating there simply due to proximity to their job. I had the fish tacos, which were definitely the worst fish tacos I have ever had. They came with a creamy sauce which I was not a fan of, and the tilapia was covered in some mystery red powder and lots of oil. The beans were fine, but the rice was overcooked. The chips and salsa were fine for this type of place, but not particularly memorable. Overall, the food was at least twice as salty as it should have been, across the board. The atmosphere was fine, as was the service. I wanted a break from my usual stand-by El Camino Real, but after eating at Rio Grande, I can’t wait to get back to El Camino Real for some real mexican food.
Return Was Better. Try to go back to a restaurant where I’ve had a less than satisfactory experience, especially if I’ve not had many of meals there. Kitchens can have bad nights, as can servers, though it is rare that both happen on the same night, and yet this restaurant proves to be much better than that one experience would seem to show. We’ve tried this restaurant several more times, almost always takeout (through TakeOut Triad), and I really have come to like much of their food. The salsa here has become one of my very favorites – it is slightly on the chunky side, loaded with cilantro, has some chopped white onion, and brings a nice amount of heat, especially when consumed with their solid chips – always order extra of both. The Rio Dip (house creation, I guess) is also excellent, as is their cheese dip. Between these 3 apps and the chips, we often don’t make it to the entrees until another day or two.The Carnitas, Chile Verde, Chile Colorado, and the Jalisco Style Tacos (small street tacos) are excellent, as well. The Al Pastor Taco & the Chorizo Taco are particularly good. The Chicken Enchiladas here are very nice. Frankly, the only problem area is the ground beef – in a taco or burrito – it is simply overcooked to the point of often being burnt and somewhat bitter – I would just avoid it – the steak in either is good. This place has obviously grown on me, and I consider it close to the best in town – might be tied if they offered Molcajete.30 Aug, 2014When It’s Good, It’s Very Good. What with trying a couple of newer Mexican restaurants in Greensboro (with very mixed results), it had been a while since we’d ordered from this neighborhood favorite, and we dealt with that oversight recently for dinner – and we are reminded that the food here is at the very least, solid – and at its very best, spectacular! The service, on the other hand, remains a work-in-progress – too, too long a work in progress! The sala, which defines the Mexican restaurant for many folks, is very special here – loaded with cilantro, chopped onion, and the heat from jalapenos. – unfortunately, the portion included with takeout orders is painfully small – no really, painfully small! Not cool #1.The Nachos Con Queso with Beef Tips is an excellent dish though a little pricey at $5.50. The Tacos (Jalisco Style) are basically small, street food tacos and were very good, as well- 1 each of Carne Asada, Pastor, Chorizo, and Carnitas were our choices. The Enchiladas Supreme, which consisted of 4 different enchiladas, was good, but not great. And we tried their taco Salad which was nice, but frankly a little scantily dressed, with just some lettuce, a little sour cream, and a bean or 2. All in all, some nice items. The poor service aspect was that 2 items, Flan and Rio Dip, were not included in the order, though we were charged for these items, just over 20% of the value of the order .Takeout Triad made sure the bill was adjusted, but we ordered the items because we wanted them, and not getting them, and then having to make a call to adjust the bill was a pain. And this is not the first time our order here has been incomplete.Like the food, wish the service would catch up. Too many very good to great Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants to chose from to except shoddy service.
Just right. Stopped by after a return flight. Ordered the chicken soup with avocado (if this is good, the rest of the offerings are usually good). It hit the spot! Flavorful broth, ample amounts of chicken, just enough rice, cilantro and avocado. Slight opportunity was with the temperature of the soup; could have been warmer. Was served barely luke-warm, but that however did not stop me from eating all of it. The chips came out slightly warm. Salsa was fresh tasting and slightly sweet. Ladies restroom was clean. Seemed like the patrons were having a nice time, might be a local hangout spot. would come back.
This place is tasty. Good food. Good service. Cheap drinks. GoodChimichangas. We frequent this place.
