Very Good BBQ, Supposedly Cooked Over Wood Coals. This recently opened, locally-owned BBQ restaurant occupies the space that formerly housed J & G, which mercifully closed its doors a while back. The interior has been reworked, and while still spartan, it is clean and bright. The pork barbecue here is smoky, coarsely chopped (almost pulled pork style), and comes out of the kitchen unsauced. The meat is tender, with a lot of smoke taste, though I doubt it is pit cooked. Since it is unsauced, the meat is relatively dry, and needs sauce – they offer both an Eastern and a Lexington house sauce – both of which are ok, but neither is particularly remarkable. I added a favorite sauce of mine (Doug Saul’s) and this was quite nice, especially with an eastern style slaw. I like this BBQ, and look forward to more visits here. Also tried the Pork Ribs (very dry, even with the outer coating of a sweet sauce), but would pass on this on future visits. The BBQ Chicken has a nice flavor but, like the ribs, was rather dry – may have simply been overcooked – I would give the chicken another shot.As to the sides: the hushpuppies are beautifully looking, but much too sweet, in fact as sweet as any I can remember trying. The Corn on the Cob was simply cooked to death – mushy and void of real corn flavor. The Boiled Red Potatoes were nicely cooked, tender but with some residual texture, but were under seasoned – boiled potatoes scream for a buttery sauce, and a nice dose of salt & pepper. The Brunswick Stew is the other star here, in my opinion. It is a real meat and vegetable stew, and not a poorly prepared, mushy vegetable soup so often encountered in BBQ joints these days. There is plenty of smoky flavored meat, and a nice amount of recognizable vegetables – throw in a couple of dashes of hot sauce, and this is good stuff – in fact, I would go back just for the stew.Good addition to the triad’s slim BBQ choices. The chopped pork and the BS are worth a trip here. We’ll be back.
