Where I get my coffee fix. I love their coffee, the bakery items and the atmosphere. Also there is now NO minimum charge necessary to use your Debit or Credit Card. The barista knows me by name and what I drink.
Debit card users be wise. There’s a $5 minimum charge. This wasn’t so good for me as I only wanted a cookie, but the barista offered me a solution I thought I’d pass on – buy a $5 gift card and use it to make your smaller purchases over time. Works great and the cookies are worth the hassle.
Second to Teresa’s Review. Tate St is an institution in Greensboro. I’ve been getting my coffee on and off from there for over 15 years. They bring a nice variety of musicians to play and the simple surroundings are very relaxing to the craziness we all experience in life. I personally never minded when they were a cash only facility. Think about the charge they experience for each credit/debt card they must accept? If you buy a latte for $3 with cash they get it all; with credit service charges are around $1 to $1.50. So they only get $1.50 themselves. Go to any major city and you’ll find out that an additional charge is placed on people who use cards for such small amounts. Support your local business… they don’t have legions of corporate cronies offsetting their costs.Again, great coffee, warm atmosphere and friendly folks. Great place to play a game of chess or cards with a new friend.
A Great Local Treasure. I frequent this coffeehouse several times a week, and while I do not really have the time to sit down inside, the few times I have I always end up in an interesting conversation with someone new. The service is what you would expect of a community and college oriented establishment, the owner will know your name, is amicable, and always concerned about the quality of your experience at Tate St. If you are in a hurry for a cup of joe, take a number at your local Starbucks where there is little or no personal interaction. ^_^The prices for a simple 20 oz. cup of coffee is absolutely unbeatable. The specialty coffees are fantastic, and the miscellaneous pastries and other ‘tasties’ are locally made and delivered daily. The muffins and other pastries are a nice brunch snack, and the wraps (the black bean wrap is very tasty) make for a great light lunch.Recently, Tate St. has installed wireless internet, use of an ATM machine, use of debit/credit to pay instead of being cash only, and have also begun to serve locally brewed beer. I have yet to try the owner’s custom brew, but that is something to look forward to in the future.Overall, I prefer patronizing Tate St. than the new coffeeshop down the street, or my local Starbucks. Tate St. offers local charm, and a quiet, comfortable, and mature atmosphere conducive to conversation. If you are looking for some sort of smaller version of a yuppie Starbucks, I would suggest going there immediately. Tate St. has character and a personal touch that is lacking in chain coffeeshops.Price: 5/5Taste: 4/5Atmosphere: 4/5 (due to some renovations lately)Service: 5/5Overall: 18/20
Horrible service. This morning: 1) a friend WHO CAME IN WITH ME was kicked out for having outside food 2) My coffee didn’t contain the shot in it I asked for 3) A friend who DIDN’T get booted had her drink sitting out for her, but was never called out 4) No wireless 5) cash only #1-3 were perpetrated by THE OWNER
