Thai Chiang Mai is a mixed bag. I went there a few times in their old high point location but was never that impressed with the food. Since I had yet to try their new location by PTI airport, I decided to give them another try. The most unique aspect of the restaurant is the live music played there at dinner. Otherwise, the decor is pretty standard – unremarkable but nice enough. Prices are good, and the service was fine. My main issue here is the food. I had the red curry, which was very bland, best suited for the elderly and young children. My wife’s dish was similarly bland. The food wasn’t bad or low quality, it just didn’t leave much of an impression. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Food was good. The protein options in the food were very small portions. The protein such as pork was very fatty which is unusual for Thai restaurants. Bothe pork and chicken tasted refrigerated and sis not have enough time in dishes to meld the flavors. I saw other tables get complimentary spring rolls but not all. Kind of makes you feel like you are not welcome. We ordered our own appetizers since we were not special. Drink refills came after asking and after finishing meal. Price is a plus and vegetable ingredients are fresh, but the trade off is a little bit of quality and service. I will try again and will update but will stick to others for Thai for my fix.
Excellent Food & Service. Lunch here yesterday was a most pleasant experience, and a bit of a surprise – the food was interesting, fresh, & very flavorful; the service was at least as good, with James leading the way in a friendly and efficient manner. The restaurant is located in the small strip center where Monesi Brazilian Buffet was housed before moving to the W. Wendover area. Thai Chiang Mai relocated here from N. Main St in High Point (when it opened 10 years ago it was the first Thai restaurant in that city) about 18 months ago. The move was pretty much forced by the shrinking business in that area of the city – an area that has seen Hams, Libby Hill, a relatively new local barbecue restaurant, and just this week, Maize Cantina, close up shop.It has been nicely decorated in soft, pleasant colors, and there is a small bar area, as well as booths and tables that are functional, if not upscale, or comfortable. The entire restaurant is bright & clean, though it is small and can get a little noisy.Wanting to trying a variety of dishes, we ordered the Thai Beef Noodle Soup, the Pineapple Fried Rice, and one of the daily lunch specials, Red Curry Chicken. We were given complimentary Spring Rolls (which was excellent), with a nice, refreshing dipping sauceThe Beef Noodle Soup was, quite simply, amazing – the tastes involved, especially after adding bean sprouts, fresh lime juice, & fresh basil, and one or more of the house made pepper sauces (they also offer Sriracha), were deeply rich, and very fresh. The portion is quite large, more than enough to share. The soup has strips of beef, noodles, onion, and even sliced tomato ( which, surprisingly, works well here), and the best tasting beef broth I’ve tried – like a great Pho, but even richer, more complex. When you eat your way to the bottom of the bowl, the remaining broth has collected all the various tastes, and is the very best of the dish – don’t spare the pepper sauce, whichever is your choice, it will make the last few spoonfuls sublime. The Pineapple Fried Rice was also a huge amount, spilling over the half of a fresh pineapple serving as a bowl – and best dealt with in a communal manner. The rice has chicken, beef, perfectly cooked shrimp, freshly chopped green onion, pineapple, egg,and cashews. This is a very nice dish. The Green Curry (Kaeng Kiew Warn) was a fairly small portion (but in line with the lunch special price) served with steamed, white rice. It included, besides chicken, bell peppers, string beans, coconut milk, curry paste, fresh basil, and eggplant. Not a bad dish, but sweet to my taste, and the texture of the eggplant approached creepy.Excellent lunch experience, and we thank James for his excellent service and charming conversation. The pricing here was more than reasonable – our entire cost for 2 huge dishes (1/2 of each we took home), the lunch special, and 2 soft drinks was $26. We’ll be back.
