Pancho Villas is now Palenque Mexican Grille… And it is great!

This is now my favorite Mexican restaurant in Kernersville. It is fairly new and I just happened across in on the way to the grocery store. It is in a fairly old strip mall so it is easy to miss. It is the newest addition to the Pancho Villa’s chain with restaurants in Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. I’m glad they opened one close to my house. That being said… The restaurant was nearly empty the first time I went there, which is sometimes an ominous sign. I was wary, but chalked it up to the fact that it was a new restaurant. The Intereior is similar to most strip mall mexican restaurants with adequate seating on two levels. It was all nice and clean and the host was gracious and made sure we were seated comfortably. Chips, salsa and drinks at the table before I even cracked the menu. The server gave us adequate time to peruse the menu and make our choices. Upon inspecting the menu, I noticed the usual Mexican/American fare that you expect in these types of places and some other dishes that would lean further out of the box of Mexican/American and closer to what would be considered Authentic Mexican, which is refreshing. I ordered the Carnitas Tacos Mexicanos (braised pork), authentic style with soft corn tortillas rather than fried and my guest ordered the Chori Pollo (grillech chicken breast with chorizo sausage). The server was politely tolerant of my questionable Spanish and put in our order. Less than 10 minutes later, our meal was served and I was happy to see that the tacos were served in a truly authentic manner with each seperately wrapped and all the proper condiments served on the side – fresh cilantro, fresh diced onion, lime wedges and a fiery little red sauce. Perfecto. Though I didn’t get to taste my guest’s Chori Pollo, the chorizo smelled beautiful and there was nothing left on the plate at the end of the meal. At the end of the meal, I felt that it was a good experience and I hadn’t gone over my budget in the process. I have since been back to Pancho Villa’s and have discovered that their Ceviche (raw fish that is marinated in lemon or lime juice to essentially cook it, along with all that makes up a very good pico de gallo) is wonderful. A lot ot restaurants are scared to offer this dish for some reason, so you rarely see it on menus around here – and it is an absolute STEAL at $3.75 for a shared appetizer or a light and refreshing lunch. I recommend it highly. I will continue to frequent Pancho Villa’s and I hope than more people learn about it so this business will do well here.
