Valentine’s Day Let Down. So very disappointed. This was our 2nd visit to Jake’s – and we were anticipating something extra special for Valentine’s Day! Unfortunately we were hugely disappointed. First…arrived before opening time, waited in line…only to be the cut off for the first fill of their limited dining room, so… a 1 hr. 15 minute wait to get a table. It was early, no biggie. Get seated and decide what to order, gave waitress our order and presented a Groupon offer. Whoops! She didn’t think Jake was accepting these since it was Valentine’s Day? Well then, why didn’t he stipulate that in his agreement with Groupon? Automatically, we were paying double for our meal. 🙁 (Folks, I use Groupon because it allows us the privilege of going to special places like Jake’s and not spending a fortune!) So already, our second hit with this dinner experience. Lastly, our food arrived. My better half prefers fish fried, and he got the seafood platter with flounder and shrimp (fries). Literally, he received decent shrimp and shoestring-cut potatoes… with fish sticks! Honestly, the flounder was served in the form of glorified fish sticks. Really? (Price of $23 too…) Although my crab-stuffed rainbow trout was decent, the crab was practically non-existent and the potatoes had zero seasoning (supposed to be garlic?). The only thing to brag about was the desert, home-made coconut cream pie. Absolutely to die for pie! Perhaps Jake needs to get his mother in the kitchen while he’s cooking. She can sure ace the sweet stuff! I’m willing to bet she would have at least put a little butter in my potatoes!
Shocked and disappointed for Valentines Day dinner. This was our fourth visit to Jake’s and we had always been pleased. Last night we went for Valentines Day but were disappointed when we left. The food was from a limited menu but it was OK. I had the hanger steak which was good. My wife had a lobster pasta which she didn’t really like. That is not why we were disappointed. When we were given our bill we learned that the price was $40/person – which was drastically over-priced for what we actually received.we had expected a price of approximately $25-$30/ plate for what we received. The special menu did not have the price and the server didn’t mention it. It was our fault for not asking! I would have had no issue with prcing if the value and quality warranted it; however,it was not appropriate for the meal provided. The unfortunate thing is that this may be the last time that we go to Jake’s due to this experience – that is how negative our experience was.
Disappointing …again.. Jake’s is one of the places where the concept is such a cool idea that people keep coming back even when the reality proves to be very lack luster. I’ve been here a handful of times, and have left each with the intention of not coming back. Service has almost always been a problem, I’ve also experienced a number of quality issues with the food- under cooked, over cooked, bland etc. However I find myself returning every six months or so to give them another chance. The draw of the cool location and concept with the idea of creative southern food overrides my common sense. Most recently I didn’t even get into the dining room. I was with a party of three at 130pm on a Saturday afternoon. Walking in, the front area was filled with people waiting while I could see that there were at least a half dozen tables clean and open. The girl acting as hostess and cashier was less than thrilled and was clearly overwhelmed ( seems to be a constant here). After 20 mins of watching this mess and several passive aggressive comments by the hostess we gave up and left. Hopefully this time the lesson will sink in and I won’t find myself at the door step of Jake’s again. Instead I’ll enjoy an establishment that can deliver on its promise.
Jakes is always good. We have been to Jakes many times. It has been excellent every time we have been there. thank you so much!
Slaw Ya’ll…. Jake’s takes me back to another place and time, well it makes me think of what another place and time were like since I was not technically alive 80 years ago. Aside from that random point this place is a nice little slice of Southern heaven. Now you have to mind your manners and remember to be patient because size matters here and that means a wait may be in your future. However, if you grew up in a small Southern town like myself you know that good things come to those who wait. Oh and those good things are fried green tomatoes, homemade pub chips, and burgers with slaw ya’ll. How can anyone get upset when you are sipping from a mason jar surrounded by Christmas lights?? So, the fried green tomatoes are even better than the movie, sweet with a mix of fried crunch. Add in a crispy pub chip dunked in homemade ranch and you will be whistling Dixie. Oh, did I mention the burger is nice and juicy with a perfect ratio of slaw atop the melted cheese and a toasted bun that begged for it to be fully devoured! Triple D for me stands for: Delish,Delish and more Delish!!
