Just had moved to Monroe from Columbus Ohio. Have a beautiful home with a pool so we get a lot of company during the summer. We did not have a Classic NC restaurant to take our families to. We decided to try Hilltop since it had a bar and seafood. Bad move. We parked and walked in…no one even said hello for about 5 minutes. We were seated to the left of the reception stand. Tables were still full of dishes. We sat down around 8p.m.. Our company looked at us as no one came to welcome us or get a drink order for over 10 minutes. We were ready to leave when a server came over…wiped off the table…and politely told us that this was not his table but he would take our order. 2 of us got the bar….2 of us ordered from the menu. I also ordered oysters on the half shell. Our orders came. 2 of us ate. Still no drinks. Half way through the meal our appetizers came. Soon after our drinks came. We asked for rolls for the table…they came with the check. Tried to tell server and manager. To no avail. Im still upset about this…embarrassed in front of company…still tipped 25%. Just dont know if we will ever go back. We got better food and service at the Knife and Fork.
My wife and I had been here many times last year. Food was ok to good and service was great. But we just went back last night for the first time since we moved and it was BAD. I ordered the steak and lobster. The lobster must have been a cage fighter because it was tough as nails. The steak was like eating charcoal. My wife ordered salmon tasted badly freezer burned (just like the lobster). If we wouldn’t have got salad and potatoes we would have been hungry.
Back again. Great service from a friendly experienced wait staff and involved management. Delicious food, large portions -excellent value. And a fine martini and really decent wine list. And, unlike a certain snooty Monroe place, they take credit cards and don’t write their own reviews!!!29 Jan, 2010Are we in Monroe, Toto? Wow! Godd drinks, nice wines at great prices, ggod food with nice service! This is so much better than your Dad’s Union County!
