Mj’s. In town for business, have my beautiful wife with me. We shared peel and eat shrimp, they were large, firm and delicious. We also had fried shrimp with fries, also good but would stick with peel and eat next time. Good service, young girl, she was trying hard. Good value for food, we would go back.

Just a seafood joint, good prices, loud, no emphasis on local sourcing. MJ’s is right in the middle of New Bern on, uh, Middle Street. If you come here expecting a nice, quiet dining experience, you’ll be turned off, but if all you want is some reasonably priced fried seafood and maybe some raw oysters or steamed clams, and don’t mind the noise, it could be just up your alley. We walked here from our riverfront hotel, the Doubletree. We started with a dozen oysters on the half shell, which were on sale for $8.95 — in these days of $3 oysters, that’s a deal. My companion had a half pound of boiled crawfish, at $6.95 well-priced, but they lacked seasoning (we used to live in New Orleans), and the waitress couldn’t tell us where they came from. As an entree I had the combo fried shrimp and fried oyster, with fries and cole slaw for around $13 — again, a deal. My wife had the signature crab cake sandwich with hushpuppies ($13.95). It was a good crab cake, but nothing you’d come back for, and you’d have to want the extra carbs to actually eat this as a sandwich. Fourteen bucks for one crab cake puts this in the mid-level restaurant category, which MJ’s is not. With two beers, two appetizers and two entrees, our bill came to $58 before tip.Bottom line: Good fried seafood, reasonable prices, good service but noisy, no atmosphere, and you wouldn’t make a special trip to eat here. I also have the feeling that the restaurant looks for the best deal on buying seafood and doesn’t necessarily give local sourcing much priority. At least I didn’t see anything that suggested the seafood was all local or North Carolina sourced.I debated giving MJ’s four stars for effort and reasonable prices, and I did enjoy the fried oysters and shrimp and loved the price on the oysters on the half shell, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to add that fourth star.

Good Lunch Spot. I travel to New Bern often for business, but this was the first time for a short personal vacation. Husband and I went to MJ’s for lunch. I had the Oyster PoBoy, and he had the Seafood Combo with scallops and oysters. We also ordered the calamari appetizer. The calamari was okay, nothing special. Both of our meals were excellent…. very fresh and not super oily or that bad fried taste. Oysters were huge! To the review that said that the PoBoy came with no sauce… there is some on the table and it also comes on the side…. which I prefer as I don’t like a lot. And really? The worse coleslaw ever? Not at all… just a simple and a bit on the tangy side. Husband had a side salad which was also fresh and I had the sweat potato fries which were crisp and hot. All the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers they had on tap.

Good steamed oysters. We went in for Mother’s Day. The oysters (although I think they were out of peak season in May) with melted butter were very good. The salads with homemade blue cheese dressing were also very good. The Mac Daddies (fried Mac and cheese) were unique and fun. The fried flounder was tasty. The wings were nothing out of the ordinary in our opinion. The creme brle cheesecake was decadent.

Relocated Marylander. Wow is the food fresh and delicious! So impressed with the food, taste and prices. We are visiting New Bern and found this GEM. If looking for awesome seafood, choose this place.

Not going back and spreading the word. MJs pawned off a $3 flank steak for a $20 Ribeye ordered medium rare which came well done. Side salads not fresh. Side potatoes cold and french fries cold and mushy. Spent $100. For a meal I could had better prepared at Burger King..it might have helped if waitress actually wrote down what we ordered. COOK A GREAT MEAL AND WE TELL 10. Rip someone off and we tell 50.
