Great Carolina Barbecue. Grade: B+Jacksonville has a number of barbecue places that tend to lean more toward Texas or other regional styles that are known throughout the country. What a treat to find the unique, lesser-known Eastern North Carolina-style barbecue at Smithfield’s.Unlike other forms of barbecue that rely on a rub or tomato-based sauce for their flavors, this Carolina barbecue uses apple cider vinegar as its main influence. If you’ve never had it before, that might sound strange but it works surprisingly well. The acid gives spark to the pork and an unexpected depth of taste. A platter of pulled pork and sides is wonderful, but a pulled pork sandwich – with cole slaw, of course – is a joyous alternative.The side dishes are excellent, including the cole slaw, baked beans, and hush puppies, but especially the Brunswick stew. Along with a sweet tea, this is an outstanding meal.If you haven’t experience this yet, you must try this.
