My husband and I had gyros. They were mediocre at best. Generally I eat very little meat, but this sandwich even to my standards did not have enough meat. The tzaziki sauce was runny. We did not expect to have excellent Greek food in a smaller community, but this fell beneath our expectations.
Cleanliness. I asked the male owner to please have someone wipe off my table and he told me to that I had a tray and the table did not need wiping. The only other open table was in the window seating area, next to a gentleman that was studying. No reason the owner could not have his personnel wipe off the table. Dirty napkins were on the floor. When I spoke with the owner’s wife, she said that the misunderstood me because of his language barrier. He understood enough to yell at me and tell me to sit somewhere else. On two other occasions, I ordered a toasted bagel sandwich and both times the bagel was not toasted.
A Gem of a Cafe in Fuquay. I LOVE Nil’s. My parents live in Fuquay and we have lunch there often. Sibel and Mustafa are two of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and Mustafa makes delicious food! I usually get the sampler salad plate with five different salads (and yes, the Russian potato salad is fantastic, as is everything else). The Greek salad is great as well. My mother spent part of her youth in Turkey so we exchange what few words of Turkish we know with Sibel and Mustafa and they are good sports about our pronunciation. But don’t go there right at noon, the line will be out the door!
Best Place to Have Lunch in the Quay. Absolutely Fabulous Food. The Russian potato salad is just like the salad I used to eat when I lived in Spain. The chocolate croissants are to die for. The homemade breads from sourdoug to pumpernickel are fabulous. The tuna topped salad is phenomenal and big for 2 to share with real Greek olives. The hummus is divine. They also make their own specail mayo on their sandwiches which is fantastic. The owners are delightful and nice! My favorite place to eat in the Quay. Child friendly, great for ladies lunch out and wifi…
Small town secret. Nil’s happens to be my favorite cafe tucked inside old town Varina. The owners (Mustafa and Sabel) are very nice people and the inside has a very home town feel, plus they have wireless internet. Everything is home made (bread, salads, pastries, sandwiches and soups). I love the chicken salad and tuna salad wraps! Come check it out next time you’re passing through.
