Authentic Japanese. Had dinner last night at Sushi Tsune after it was recommended to me by people in the Sushi Meetup group, and now I’m wishing I had discovered this little gem years ago. Having been to Japan many times and fallen in love with its cuisine, I’m always on the lookout for authentic Japanese food beyond the ubiquitous bogo-sushi and teppanyaki type places. But just a glance at Sushi Tsune’s menu immediately told me that this place was the real deal. For sushi, I tried the Uni (sea urchin roe) and Hotate (scallop), two of my favorites that I rarely have these days. Both were fresh, sweet, and well-prepared. The sushi rice here is definitely good quality as well. Then I had the Nabeyaki Udon, as it was a cold damp night, and I really wanted a hot soup to warm me up. It came still simmering in an earthenware pot, a hearty one-pot meal with udon noodles, tempura shrimp, fish cake, chicken, and a poached egg. And all these flavors mixed together to produce the most superb broth! Delicious and satisfying! The service was friendly and attentive. The prices are reasonable. The restaurant itself is small and cozy. They even have a section where you can sit Japanese-style on tatami mats at low tables. I will definitely be back here again soon!

Excellent Sushi!. I’ve been to most sushi bars in the area and this is in my top three. The ginger salad dressing is fantastic. The miso soup was exceptional. Sushi rice was excellent. Nori, crisp and delicious. The fish was fresh and tasty.Tsune-san has been in the same location for almost 17 years now, and has consistently provided a wonderful, high quality dining experience. Don’t let the exterior or location fool you. If you are in the area you will want to check this place out!

Nice little place. Nothing fancy here….just simple Japanese food at reasonable prices. The tempura is fantastic and the fish is fresh.

You’d never guess this is the best sushi in Raleigh. But it is. Tsune’s a tiny little place that looks like it used to a fast-food outlet of some kind – it’s really easy to miss, tucked in next to the Arby’s on Hillsborough. But their sashimi and miso are absolutely outstanding, and the hand rolls are the best in town, no competition. I think it’s a family-run restaurant. The chef is an older gentlemen, always all smiles, and really good at what he does. I remember dining there once when the power went out, and watching him slice and roll by candlelight. Pretty awesome. If you go, ask about the 700 roll. It isn’t always on the menu board, but it’s a great meal. And if you’re a hamachi lover like I am, Tsune’s is always buttery and perfect.

Best around! Small & authentic place with the best sushi chef ever. Excellent sushi & best miso soup ever. I’m a regular because of the service, food & quality. Great prices also!

Excellent, real, sushi. Sushi Tsune near NC State is a friendly, excellent restaurant. The food is as good or better than the sushi restaurants that I have visited in Tokyo. (Speaking as a former nonvegetarian, I have sampled all the rolls.) The service is also invariably good. While it is not as flashy or pretentious inside as some of the newer Triangle restaurants, I believe the dining experience is superior because of the amiable and relaxing atmosphere. Fellow diners at the sushi bar are friendly, too. The restaurant is generally low key and inviting. It’s easy to become a regular.I should also mention that there is something for everyone, from Japanese citizens visiting the U.S. and looking for a taste of home – to sushi newbies who want to try it for the first time. For me, the vegetarian fare is ample. I recommend the Ume Shiso Kyu roll, the Garden State Roll, and some Oshinko.
