Hidden gem. If you’re looking for great Japanese food, this is your place. My friends and I all ordered various chicken and beef dishes, along with various sushi plates, and none of us was disappointed. The owner even offered us miso soup on the house, but I had so much food in front of me that I passed on it (my friends said it was delicious). The portions are huge, by the way, and you’ll probably go home with a doggy bag. The shop for Asian food products (this makes up the majority of the restaurant – in fact, the restaurant kind of feels like a last-minute addition) is fascinating and I’d like to get a wok and start experimenting! If you don’t mind sitting along a counter that faces the sidewalk (and the homeless people passing by), dining in is fairly comfortable.

Very impressed with Tokyo Deli! I tried the chicken Yakisoba to go and it was delicious! Everything about the meal was fresh and certainly affordable for the quality they serve. The owners were incredibly nice and helpful. I even picked up a few things from their grocery section at a very reasonable price. I will definitely stop by again soon to try out their sushi and other authentic menu items.

Very cool place. Had the gyu udon noodle bowl, it was very flavorful and a good introduction to the concept. If you like beef and noodles and onions and a ton of flavor, this is for you. Retail section had a smaller selection than Saigon market, but there was plenty of variety. If you’re looking for specialty Japanese kitchen items, they’ve got it. Will be back to try something new soon!

Ate at Tokyo-Deli for the first time today. Very timely and friendly service. You can dine in or take out. The dining area allows seating for approximately 10-12 people along the outer windows. The restaurant had a Japanese shop within so if you are craving Japanese or fall in love with something while there you can purchase food or gift items to take home. Loved the experience; quite and laid back atmosphere. Sushi was delicious! Will definitely be returning soon.

Friendly Tasty Spot. It smells delicious when you walk in. Take your time and check out some of the grocery items. I got some dried wakme seaweed. The owner was happy to help with all my questions. I will research recipes and return for the items.

Comparable to a NYC noodle house…. This place seems like a secret, as not many people I mention it to have even heard of it. It is located near the DMV and ABC store on Carolina Beach Rd., and is probably confused as an asian market, as they are filled with shelves of imported japanese goods for sale. The previous owners, an adorable Japanese couple, retired and sold to another adorable Japanese couple, with the intentions of maintaining the original menu, which they have done to a T.Ordering is easy because most menu items are displayed in fake food form—you can see what is in the bowls even though the names may be unfamiliar. I almost always order the #27 Nabiyaki udon noodle bowl, because it has the most delicious variety of stuff in it–fish cakes, sweet fried tofu, mushrooms, green onions, and a fried sunny side up egg in a savory sweet broth. The best part is breaking the yolk and swirling it in the hot bowl. The only comparison I have had is when we ate at a noodle shop in the East Side in NYC recently, and I actually preferred the one back home! Awesome, authentic and memorable. I don’t mind if it stays a secret so I can keep it’s deliciousness to myself!

I wouldn’t have thought that little Japanese deli next to a pawn shop & the DMV could be good, but tokyo deli is wonderful! Cutest little chatterbox wife will charm you while her more bashful husband cooks delicious food.
