A popular place among the locals: I couldn’t understand the accents of some of the people seated around us, but they sounded German. That’s a plus for what is basically a German-style restaurant.I started with a cup of knoepfla, a potato dumpling soup that I’ve only ever had once before (yesterday, in Bismarck, so that makes me an expert). This soup was more direct in its seasoning than what I’d had before, and the dumplings were cut much smaller — about the size of baby lima beans. By the time I finished it, I’d decided this was the better of the two versions of knoepfla I’ve had.My dinner was a small hamburger steak, served with green beans (and extra green beans, in lieu of the potato choice) and a roll. The meat was very nicely seasoned, and so far from dry that I was shocked at how easily the knife cut it. Wish I’d ordered the larger one (not that I need the extra food). The beans were, you know, canned green beans, but served nicely drained, and I found that if you put a little A-1 sauce on green beans, they taste really, really good.I couldn’t resist dessert, because there was something that I assume is a local specialty, Sour Cream Raisin pie. Home made fer sure, fer sure, and though I’m not a big fan of meringue on pies, I ate every bit of it. The filling had an unusual, very pleasing texture, and the overall impression was quite good. The Curmudgeon’s Ratings:FOOD: 3 chili peppers (out of 5)SERVICE: 2 1/2 chili peppersAMBIENCE: 2 1/2 chili peppersVALUE: 2 1/2 chili peppers
