There was a time when Chinese food was about as exotic a cuisine as you could get in America, outside certain snootily serfistikated enclaves in the Northeast. Back then, we used to marvel at the subtlety of flavours and textures of the Chinese table, and could imagine nothing more extraordinary. Then came the Thai and Vietnamese and sushi and Korean restaurants, and suddenly Chinese food seemed, somehow, old-fashioned and pedestrian. The food at this place in out-of-the-way Mandan, North Dakota, puts Chinese food back among the most interesting and enticing of cuisines. Here I have had the most delicious, not to say unusual, egg rolls I have had anywhere, and the best hot and sour soup; I have had outstanding potstickers and a delectable dish of tender cashew beef that may never be surpassed. Everything (except the tea, which was quite ordinary) was marvellously prepared and beautifully presented. The only downside was that the waitress’s lack of English (and, need I say it, my lack of whatever Chinese language she spoke) made special requests a real challenge. The Curmudgeon’s Ratings:FOOD: 5 chili peppers (out of 5)SERVICE: 2 chili peppersAMBIENCE: 3 1/2 chili peppersVALUE: 2 1/2 chili peppers
I highly recommend the Rice Bowl for a good meal where you’ll have plenty of leftovers and money in your wallet still. The only down side is if you done in the restaurant then keep your eyes closed while your being guided to your seat. It’s not quite the cleanest place to dine but it is good none the less!
Best Chinese Food in ND. They have the best Chinese food in ND; however, this is not saying that it is amazing as ND is lacking in this department. They are the only place in the state that I’ve had paper chicken, which is quite good. Their food has also not been overly greasy (still kind of greasy but it’s chinese food in ND).
Smell?. Unlike the other review of this restaurant, I certainly did not find any unusual smell and have eaten here several times. The restroom is in fact not in the restaurant. It is nice to eat at a Chinese restaurant that does not have a buffet and has great food and attentive service, I do not like everything but not sure what the other reviewer’s problem was?
Meh – I’ve had worse. Not entirely surprised that the food wasn’t that amazing. The restaurant is, after all, located above the public library that apparently smells constantly of a bathroom (think rest stop plus hand soap). The food is overpriced for what you get. Expect to pay $8-10 per entree (enough for 1.5 people), including a small cup of rice (fried rice for $1.75 more). The entrees are okay, but nothing stellar. The sweet and sour chicken’s sauce tasted like ketchup and a sweetner mixed together, but the chicken itself was good. The eggrolls look like a giant deep fried twinkie and tasted nothing like the eggrolls I’ve had at larger city Chinese restaurants. Good Chinese is impossible to find in the metro.
